The paper “The Impact of Collaboration between Firms on Advancing Technology” is a brilliant example of a management research paper. Firms have always engaged in a competition to win the market. However, some firms have understood the benefit of working jointly to achieve different objectives. This research focuses on technological firms that have collaborated to meet various goals jointly. For the collaboration to be successful the firms involved have to play a facilitative role. The research identifies policy as a critical factor in ensuring the collaboration survives and achieves its goals.

Individual firms have their independent policy that governs how various activities need to be implemented. Therefore, a conflict by the firms in the collaboration can easily erupt due to the difference in how different activities are handled. The study found out that that the following policies are vital in a collaboration process: consultations, research, and development, sales, and procurement. Therefore, firms that have entered into collaboration need to align these policies to avoid any possible friction in operation.

These policies led to the formulation of a specific objective: to determine how these changes impact technology advancement in collaboration. The study relies on the three theories to support the success of the collaboration. Resource dependency theory asserts that collaboration becomes successful by individual firms having access to resources they would not afford prior collaboration. Organization learning theory and transaction theory were incorporated to develop a new model for this research; where the following elements formed part of the new model: bargaining power, staff efficiency, cost reduction, knowledge, growth, profit enhancement, and resource sharing.

These elements describe the benefits that can be derived by firms in collaboration. A framework for the operation of the selected elements was required to ensure a smooth flow of activities within the respective collaboration. Three policies (research and development, sales and procurement, and consultations) were identified to be vital in creating a framework for those elements.
