Extract of sample "Teachers in the Film Stand and Deliver"

I had a teacher during my formative learning years who helped me develop not only my Math abilities but also a life-long love for the subject.  I was in the 8th grade when I met the teacher who would change the course of my future. He was my Algebra teacher and he was unlike any teacher I had met during the course of my young educational life. From experience, I knew that such complicated Math topics could become very frustrating for the students who had to learn it and pain for the teachers who had to teach it.

That was how I came to learn about Math concepts over the years. But this teacher was different. He made teaching so interesting because he dared to think outside of the box just like Jaime Escalante did. For my teacher was more than just a series of numbers, letters, and graphs. Math was a way of life. Something that we had used in our daily lives but never realized we were doing so. He used our daily lives to help us learn concepts and he showed us how it applied to the Math principle he was teaching.

He was a teacher who also subscribed to the philosophy of Escalante about Math being “in your blood”. My teacher strove to keep the students interested in the Math lessons he was teaching. Just like Escalante, he too needed to get creative at times because of let's face it, Math can get boring for most people. But his creativity and wit kept our class interested in the lessons he had to teach us and we were all amazed when we came to the realization that we actually had a solid grasp of the Algebraic concepts as it was taught to us.

It was thanks to my 8th-grade teacher's patience and creativity in teaching that I was able to find reasons and ways to enjoy Math. I can't help but remember the many similarities between him and Jaime Escalante. Just like Escalante, my teacher encouraged me to continue my Math studies when we both realized that I had the potential and a gift to actually succeed in the field of Math studies. The way he used Math to teach us the concept of patience and self-discipline is the very reason that I still challenge myself these days when it comes to learning new things.
