Genre is mainly used for the purpose of providing an artistic control which helps the author to be in a position of controlling the desire to mix his or her personal feelings and conclusive ideas thus preventing the effects of individualism. Genre also helps the author to bring out the special effects thus bringing out a more elaborate dimension of the movie. Genre is mainly used for the purpose of author identification, reviewing, marketing and advertising. Genres are mainly organized in a manner to show the relationship between the texts and the audience. John uses genre in this case to bring out an impressive narrative (Clarke 67-8). The “thing” takes up the science fiction genre. Its setting comes out of this world, it involves aliens which in this case takes the form of the person it takes. The science fiction genre takes up issues or themes of social systems from worlds different from the existing. This kind of genre is mainly defined by features such as: new technology, future occurrence and a location of outer space. Most of the issues covered by the scientific fiction genre are mainly expressed in metaphor and imagery form. Genre movies are mainly made with the intention of giving satisfaction, sympathy, fear rather than action and revolt. It should be note that the science fiction genre mainly focus on meeting the needs of the dominant class this is done by maintaining their status quo and also give a consolation to the oppressed in society. The science fiction genre movies also work at giving solutions to problems which are presented to us by intrusion. This kind of genre deals with what is beyond our reason and normal understanding. Mise-en-scene is mainly the director’s use of artistic expression and an arrangement in brining out the content of a screen text. This feature brings out the better part of the contribution of authorship to the creation of films and their criticism. The style may also involve specific effects on visuals which are free from literal models. The author‘s work mainly tries to portray his attempt to give his own perspective by working as per the expectation of the genre. The director starts off the scene in a true science fiction genre, this is by creating an emotional discomfort of sensory attack that he maintains throughout the movie The author and the genre directly relate so as to bring out the author’s concerns through the genre interplay. Carpenter’s “The Thing” is of the scientific genre, its setting is based on aliens; beings from out of space. The Thing being referred to in this movie takes up a person and then mimics its nature. It can thus be said that the director uses the scientific fiction genre to reinforce the status quo. Based on the fact that the movie is horrific in nature, it therefore manages to instil a depth of fear which is one of its intended goals. The movies starts off from a distant setting in that the first encounter of the movie is of suspense; the audience does not know what to expect . It then turns to be quite unimaginable when a helicopter comes on sight chasing a thing which turns out to be a dog (Russell 98). The plot unfolds on a snow setting thus giving the impression of the cold feeling and the unforseen fear. The pilot then goes ahead to shoot the dog over and over again, this gives the dog fear and leads to the death of the crew on the helicopter. It thus comes out clearly that the director is using the genre for the purpose of reinforcing the status quo. This can be said to be evident by the fact that fear that the director manages to instil in his characters. The director uses a perfect setting and perfect occurrence of events, in that it is by the dog running to the American camp that the helicopter lands and explodes but the dog in this case survives by the reason that it is the main object of the movie. Though the movie does not leave any chance of anything happening ahead the audience is just left with suspense. The death of the helicopter crew gives the audience a new light to the plot of the movie though no questions are answered are answered but more questions are brought up. The Thing which from the start seems to be innocent and harmless turns out to be a dreary to the audience and to the characters themselves (Russell 112). The director uses his freedom and style in bringing out an explicit arrangement of the plot, in that knowing that there is cabin fever which causes anger in the isolated bases the director lets the events to open up in away that one leads to another. While the commander thinks he has done away with the trouble it comes out that by welcoming The Thing they have invited more trouble. The fact that The Thing survives the rain of bullets can also be seen as use of a metaphor by the director because on the other hand the gun man shooting at The Thing is killed by use of a single bullet. It is from this set that it can be similarly be applied that the troubles that are in the lives of the audience are self made. The director uses snow in the Norwegian camp after the fire has taken place to symbolize the fear, death and the uncertainty ahead. The director explicitly uses special effects to bring out the issues that the movie sought to address for instance the issue of aliens in space and amongst us. The director’s effects make the movie more of a realistic occurrence than just a theoretical coordination of the screen texts. The special effects also work in this case to support the nature of the genre; this is for the case where the director uses them to bring out the horrific nature of the movie. The director can also be given credit for using the special effects to meet the nature of the genre. The director bases his storyline on a thing out of space ‘aliens’ , this should be considered to be a reinforcement to the status quo of his audience. The director’s plot is quite creative and breath-taking in that “The Thing” used in this case is quite strange in that it can digest something and transform itself to the form of the digested. This should be considered as away of reinforcing the nature of the genre by the fact that the fear, tension and suspicion which are intended by the science fiction genre are brought out. “The Thing” in this movie takes on its victims while they are alone making the audience wonder why the characters would not be together to avoid being taken by The Thing. The director manages to answer this question by the depiction of The Thing as taking form of its prey thus implying any of them could be “The Thing” (Matthews 121). The suspicion and fear that the director successfully brings out makes his cast to successfully succumb to The Thing thus making the genre a success. The director’s use of special effects also manages to drive fear and the horrific atmosphere into his audience. It should also be noted that Carpenter manages to integrate the paranoia effects of the movie and the text (Matthews 88). It is amazing how the director’s setting manages to perfectly match with the mood of his characters, this comes out by the way that the season is winter and the men on the scene are all bored by everything that they are doing. The director places everything at the right pace at the right time, for instance when The Thing mutates to an ‘alien’ the director puts in place a flame thrower which is temporarily use to fight it. The temporal fight of The Thing shows the director’s plan for continuity of the movie. When the men realized that there was a creature amongst them that was not human there reigns a feeling of mistrust and paranoia which the director uses to his advantage by playing with the characters emotions so as to harmonize the horrific effects (American Film Institute). The director manages to reinforce the status quo of The Thing by the fact that it is hard to kill, see and even evade. The movie thus can be said to have been used symbolically to show the certain problems that emerge in the society and no one has a solution to the happenings or the problem. The audience is therefore left with no option but to succumb to the problems that face them. The author successfully uses the psychological fear in making the genre meet its expectations. The director manages to show the implications of the supernatural force against humanity. The director explicitly uses a rich sense of imagery and metaphor thus brings out the authors personal expression in an artistic orderly manner (Muir 45). The director works on the graphic effects of The Thing by working on the replica nature of The Thing thus managing to bring out the horrific and suspense of the genre. The nature of The Thing in this movie comes out as a psychological torture to the characters of the film (Carpenter & Campbell 23-8). The director’s use of a highly artistic style in the story approach, this is easily noticed by the way the scenes end unexpectedly, the wandering of the camera and the way the parts of ‘evidence’ bring up more questions. The fact that there is less progress on character development makes the genre a success by the fact that we do not know much about these characters thus creating the fear that they might be human or forms of The Thing. The fact being that the movie is a horror the fear instilled fits in the picture. The director has also successfully used the sound effects to match with the genre of the movie, for instance he uses funeral-like musical themes which are in line with the mood of the movie which is desolate and full of hopelessness. The director successfully withholds the comforting resolution expected by his audience (American Film Institute). The movie thereby conclude with the audience never getting to know whether one of the two survivors is affected or not. Conclusion It can thereby be concluded that the director uses the genre of the movie to reinforce the status quo. The signature style is also used by the director in bringing out a systematic comprehensive movie of the science and fiction genre. The movie thus looks into the void in human nature that is sometimes unsolvable. Works cited American Film Institute. American film, Volume 7. American Film Institute, 1981.
