Unit 5: Performance Appraisal – Peer Review The discussion in this evaluation paper intends to analyze the various quality features in relation to clinical behaviors deciphered by healthcare professionals, i.e. nurses. In this regard, an individual nurse has been considered for the completion of the evaluation form. The various clinical behaviors include teamwork towards the deliverance of care and teaching to patients, charting, committee participation as well as professional involvement and nursing care planning. After the completion of the evaluation form, a response or a feedback has also been presented concerning the qualities of the professional, i.e. the nurse, on the basis of her obtained rankings. Introduction The philosophical implications of performance appraisal are principally described as the periodic and the formal assessment of the performances deciphered by individuals with the intention of making effective career decisions. It involves the measurement, recognition as well as the supervision of human performance within an organization (Randhawa, 2007). The major objectives of initiating performance appraisal can be identified in terms of recognizing the strong along with the weak points of the personnel and delivering feedback to them about their working performances over a given period of time (Grobler & Warnich, 2005). The various crucial benefits of performance evaluation include the development of the employees, forming effectual communications with the working staffs and most importantly increasing the motivation of the personnel (DelPo, 2007). In this discussion, a completed evaluation form based on various qualities relating with the performance appraisal for the clinical behaviors deciphered by a nurse has been taken into concern. Moreover, a response or a feedback about the professional, i.e. the nurse, on the basis of the completed evaluation form has also been portrayed in the discussion. Evaluation Form Clinical Behaviors While evaluating the performance appraisal form, the rankings from 1 to 5 has been taken into concern; where 1 denotes outstanding performance, 2 denotes satisfactory performance, 3 denotes average performance, 4 denotes below average performance and 5 denotes unsatisfactory performance. Client Care: 1 2 3 4 5 The notion of leading as well as managing different healthcare activities are considered to be the indispensable components of all professional nurses. It is also regarded to be quite important in today’s rapidly changing healthcare system to ensure better performances. The various healthcare or clinical care activities include personal care of the patients, proper treatments, medication administration and coordination of patient care with the physicians along with other healthcare related workers (Yoder-Wise, 2011). Comments: The nurse, being entitled to conduct various healthcare activities has been viewed to be quite satisfactory (i.e. 2). This is due to the fact that the nurse has been observed to render great significance towards actively developing her skills on the aforementioned segments through participating in regular training courses as well as programs. Teamwork: 1 2 3 4 5 Considering the job responsibilities of a nurse, effective teamwork may enhance the quality as well as the care of the patients by a considerable level. In order to deliver proper clinical services to the patients for the purpose of improving their performances, it is quite necessary to build an effectual teamwork with every member belonging to multidisciplinary working teams. Hence, the virtues of teamwork attempt to enhance the ability of the team to respond instantly towards the crises of the patients and thereby improve the clinical results relating with the patients’ recovery (NurseTogether LLC, 2012). Comments: The nurse is ranked with outstanding performance (i.e. 1) due to the fact that she has been observed to consistently maintain an effective communication with the different healthcare members which ultimately forms a successful teamwork. Client Teaching: 1 2 3 4 5 The essential facets of client teaching or patient teaching along with education are considered to be other necessary components in the nursing profession. According to various researches, it has been observed that the clinical outcome can prove to be quite favorable by delivering a solid knowledge or teaching about the disease and the most suitable treatment procedure to the patients (Nurse Together LLC, 2012). Comments: In relation to client teaching, the nurse has been designated with average ranking (i.e. 3) owing to the fact observed that she is little experienced in the area of client teaching which in turn limits her proficiency in the quality. Committee Participation: 1 2 3 4 5 The conception of committee participation is much vital for the development of the committee processes which deliver valuable information for smoothly performing the different tasks assigned to the committee (NMMA, n.d.). Comments: On this basis, the nurse has been ranked with an average marking (i.e. 3) due to the fact that she has been observed to provide minimum information and contributes less to the committee procedure. Charting: 1 2 3 4 5 The idea of charting is often viewed as a procedure to maintain a medical record which communicates crucial information to other healthcare team members in order to make any valuable decisions regarding any particular healthcare issue. The charting function of the nurses majorly include, recording the medical documents including the particular about medications, clinical care activities and treatments of the individual patients in a precise as well as timely manner (Slideshare Inc., 2012). Comments: With regards to her charting performance, the nurse has been marked with outstanding ranking (i.e. 1) as her performances apparently deciphers the systematical conduct of medical records taking into account every medical document which includes the medications, treatments as well as other relevant clinical care activities of the patients. Nursing Care Plans: 1 2 3 4 5 The proper execution of nursing care plans is quite essential for improving the professional development procedure which in turn leads towards a successful career prospect. The various nursing care plans can be identified to be concentrated on directing the newly admitted clients or patients during the admission shift and periodically updating as well as altering nursing care plans. Comments: In the context of nursing care plans, the nurse has been ranked with satisfactory marking (i.e. 2) due to the reason that she has been observed to actively desire making innovative nursing care plans for her professional advancements with a shared vision towards the progression of the organization. Professional Involvement: 1 2 3 4 5 The impact of professional involvement is quite significant for the nurses as it attempts to support them in generating a healthy as well as a congenial working atmosphere within their workplace. The professional involvement of the nurses includes participation in various organizational activities and attending in different educational seminars relating with healthcare (Dale, 2009). Comments: On this basis, the nurse has been marked with average ranking (i.e. 3) as it has been viewed that she tends to avoid participating in any organizational activities along with other educational seminars focusing on healthcare. Response On the basis of the feedback of the aforementioned performance evaluation form, it can be stated that the nurse will have to focus largely upon the professional areas including client teaching, committee participation and professional involvement. The improvement in these significant areas can be further expected to ultimately lead the professional in attaining advancements in her professional growth which in turn is quite likely to enhance t living standards of the patients, under her supervision, by a considerable extent. Apart from the aforesaid areas, the nurse deciphers a better performance in other relevant professional aspects which would contribute in raising the quality of the patients care to a satisfactory extent. Additionally, it has been noted in the performance evaluation form that the nurse performed according to the expectations in the professional aspects including teamwork and charting which can certainly impose a positive impact upon her professional development in future. Conclusion After acquiring a brief idea about the conception of performance appraisal, it can be stated that hospitals or healthcare institutions attempt to pay utmost attention towards subjecting performance appraisals. This is because they are extensively liable to the patients as well as the community in order to enhance their quality services relating with healthcare. Contextually, the valued information, which was collected through the conduct of performance appraisal that can be identified in the above discussion, ultimately provides a strong base for the recruitment as well as the selection of appropriate staffs in different job positions within the healthcare sector. Relating with this assignment, the duly filled performance appraisal form concerning the various quality facets in relation to clinical care behaviors deciphered by professionals, is quite likely to ultimately motivate and preserve a quality working team within the organization.
