How a team assigns work, makes decisions and holds team members accountable determine group success. “Code of conducts are a set of guidelines or rules that a group, a team or organization establishes to shape the interaction of group members, team members or organization members with each other and with staffs who are external to the group, team or organization” (Deborah, 2005). “Code of conducts can be developed first and then adapted as the group sees the need” (Flores, 2000). “Once Code of Conducts have been developed will be used to guide group or team behavior, and used to assess how well team members are interacting” (Alvarez and Samuel, 2007). “Code of conducts enables the team members to call each other out on any behavior that negatively affects the success of the group” (Deborah, 2005). In conclusion, “the Code of Conducts reflects the team commitment to the highest standards of ethical and legal conduct” (Alvarez and Samuel, 2007). “The Code of Conducts should not contain all team or organization policies or include all details regarding any policy. Rather, “the Code of Conduct sets forth the fundamental ethical and legal principles for conducting all aspects of the team interactions” (Alvarez and Samuel, 2007). Exercise 2 i). why is it necessary to use reference materials and acknowledge such use? a. References show your reader the range and nature of your source materials (Gilmore, 2008) b. It allows the reader to follow up in more details the facts or ideas that you have referred to. c. it allows the reader to distinguish your own findings and ideas from those you have drawn from the work of other authors. d. If you use another author’s work without acknowledge the author then you risk facing charges of plagiarism which can bring criminal charges against the person who used the work. ii). Identify five different types of information (not resources) from other authors that must be referenced if you use them in your own submissions. Always reference: Direct quotations – this is when you use or copy another author’s material word-for-word in your writing.  Paraphrasing – this is when you take another author’s ideas and put them into your own words. if you borrow idea from a secondary source or you are paraphrasing in some detail from a primary one Whenever you make specific references to the work of another author. Whenever another person’s work has been critically in developing your own findings or ideas (Stern, 2007). iii). Define plagiarism and discuss how you can avoid it Plagiarism is stealing and` passing off words or ideas of another person as one’s own. Plagiarism can be avoided by citing sources. This is simply acknowledging that materials that have been used in the work is borrowed (Williams, 2008). Another way in which plagiarism can be prevented is through paraphrasing the original work. Exercise 3 Document how you have applied the problem solving cycle to this Task. This can either be in your answers themselves, as separate paragraphs, or as an Appendix (but you should refer to this so the marker knows where to look). The Problem-solving Cycle is an approach that involves brainstorming, analyzing until an optimal solution is reached. Problem solving Cycle has seven-steps for an effective problem-solving process (Van Aken, 2005). The first step is to identify the issue (Van Aken, 2005). The issue in the task was to ‘Demonstrate my Learning’. The second step is to understand everyone’s interests (Van Aken, 2005). The interest of the tutor is to know if what I have been taught in the past weeks I can be able to apply them in the task. The third step is to list the possible solutions (options) (Van Aken, 2005). The options I had was from different sources about Code of Conduct. But I had to choose 5 different references. The fourth step is to evaluate the options (Van Aken, 2005). From the five references i had to use the three references that have been used in exercise 1. The fifth step is to select an option (Van Aken, 2005). I had to use the three references above. The six step is to document the agreement (Van Aken, 2005). I started doing the assignment using the three references. The last step is evaluation (Van Aken, 2005). I had to evaluate once I finished doing the question. Task 2 - Personal Learning Goals Personal Learning Goals Steps and Resources Needed Evaluation strategy I want steady professional employment in the field of sustainability Relevant experience, interests and accomplishments Apply for employment and be evaluated for the work which i will do for the company. I want to combine teaching English with travel. Enroll in a college that teaches English and tourism. To do a common entrance exam at every level of English studies. I want to start video blogging To open a website on my own. The feedback that i will get from my blogging site will be used to evaluate me. I want to improve my knowledge of alternative economics To take personality test results for economics. To do a common entrance exam at every level of English studies. Task 3 – Teamwork & Leadership Exercise 1 What do you think transforms a group of people into a functional and effective team? “Group dynamics” describes the effects of roles and behaviors on the members of a team, and on the team as a whole (Weingart & Weldon, 1991). A team with a positive dynamic is easy to spot. Members in a team trust one another, and work towards a collective decision, and they hold one another accountable for the success of the team. The following strategies can be used to transform a group of people into a effective and functional team: i. Tackle problems quickly: if one member of the team has adopted a behavior that’s affect the group negatively, action should be taken quickly to challenge the behavior (Harley, 2010). ii. Define roles and responsibilities: a team charter should be created as soon as the team has been formed. iii. Break Down Barriers: team building exercises will ease new colleagues into the group gently, it will also help the group to combat the “black sheep effect” which happens when some of team members turn against individuals in a team they consider different (Harley, 2010). iv. Focus on communication: communication is central to a team, so make sure that each member in a team is communicating clearly to avoid any ambiguity (Harley, 2010). Exercise 2 What personal characteristics do you possess that may work for or against the team? The personal characteristics that I possess that make the team to be success include: Communication skills- Good communication skill is required at every level of the team. Communication skills that I possess have helped me to navigate difficult situations in the team (Harley, 2010). Motivating skills- this skill has enable me to inspire other team members. Motivation is best done by guidance and example, and not by issuing commands (Bill and Jeff 2006). Team building skills- these skills have enable me to put together strong teams that work well. Risk taking skills- I have learnt how to assess risk and run scenarios in the team that has helped me to make better decisions. Vision and goal setting- being visionary, I have been able to tell others members where the team is going, why the team is going, and how the team is going to get there (Bill and Jeff 2006). In most cases, members of the team are motivated when I articulate my vision for the team, along with the steps that are needed to achieve this vision. Exercise 3 List advantages (including how you can maximise them) and disadvantages (including how you can minimise them) of teamwork Advantages i. I can use my communication skills to navigate difficult situations that face the group. ii. Team building skills will enable me to bring the team members together and think as one thing. iii. Vision that I have set for the group will enable me and the team members not to depart from the short and long term goals we have set for the group. Disadvantages i. Where communication in the team fail to work due to a problem that has happened in the group, I will sent the matter to my boss to solve it. ii. Where the group has not reached its goals, we will set goals that are achievable in the team. Exercise 4 Discuss the importance of leadership to effective teamwork and how you might incorporate this into your team in this course There are many factors that are involved in the development of a good team, effective leadership is among them (Weingart & Weldon, 1991). Leadership refers to the ability to develop and sustain a positive working culture to inspire or motivate team members to play their part in creating an environment in which there is high standards of practice and a positive approach. A key art of leadership is ‘vision’. It is easier for a team to lose their focus on the purpose the team tend to fulfil. A good leader will ensure that the vision of the team is shared by the members and that they are not allowed to drift too far away from the vision (Bill and Jeff 2006). A good leader would promote high morale in the team by playing a key role in creating an environment in which members feel supported and valued. This will helps to prevent such problems as backbiting, rumour-mongering, and gossip which can be so detrimental to the group’s functioning. Task 4 – Design Area Choice The design project that interests me is the Fly and Mosquito Management project in Nepal. 17.3 million Nepalese are at risk of malaria (Matta, Khokhar and Sachdev, 2004). Out of this number, 5.6 million reside forest and forest fringes and inner Terai and are at high risk of malaria (Matta, Khokhar and Sachdev, 2004). This project will give me recognition as having be among few people in Nepal who are able to prevent or eradicate malaria disease to millions of Nepalese (Matta, Khokhar and Sachdev, 2004). Through Fly and Mosquito Management project, Malaria disease will be eradicated or brought under control and this will be done through establishing free drug-distribution points and changing insecticides in areas of high prevalence (Tyagi, Roy and Malhotra, 2005). With regular surveillance and spraying to kill the mosquitoes that carry the disease, the number of people with malaria will fell drastically. The technical consideration that will be associated with this project is remote sensing by the use of a satellite. This will help me to map various locations in Nepal and as a result of that I will be able to group those regions in term of risk (Tyagi, Roy and Malhotra, 2005).
