Leatherbarrow & Mostefavi, On Weathering: The Life of Buildings in Time Leatherbarrow and Mostefavi argue that obsession with the image of a building is closely related to weathering. In their article, they refer to image as the “finish” of a building or structure, attractive aspect of the building1. The authors state that weathering does two important things when it comes to image: subtraction and addition. Weathering subtracts the finish of architecture and construction, and adds the finish of nature (or the environment).

In this regard, the final image of a building is usually not what it looked like at the time it was completed, but what it will look like after weathering applies the final “touch” of nature. Weathering and erosion exposes newer layers of the same material by erasing one surface and revealing another2. The authors argue that nature and the environment has a bona fide claim on all works of art, and that that through weathering all art forms are eventually assimilated back to their locations, places from which they were first taken3.

In essence, image takes precedence over nature when it comes to construction, but nature always has the final say regardless of the structure built. The fact of the matter is that this argument holds water because it has been proven. All things on earth (life included) are governed by nature, and therefore construction is defined by nature before, during and after it is done. The subjection of structures to weathering and erosion simply peels back the “mask” they are wearing and reveals their true, original identity.Notes1.
