Qatar Architects Professional of conducts and ethical standards This paper will examine and scrutinize professional and ethical code of conduct of Architects in Qatar, analyze its rules, ethical standards, and components in canons according to RIBA codes and AIA. The AIA and code of ethics is an essential aspect in enhancing the ability of architects to understand the professional responsibilities and ethical standards. This is the reason why the Qatari architect governing body has set standards that govern the way architects operate in Qatar. The first section of the paper will analyze Qatar architects code of conduct and professional work standards. The second part analyses and relates the AIA codes and then the RIBA codes to that of Qatar Architects’ ethical standards and professional codes are essential since they work towards aligning themselves with the AIA’s Ethics Code on Human Rights: This is through prohibiting design of execution and spaces, torture, inhuman treatment, and degrading treatment of architects. Qatar Ethical standards and professional code of conducts All registered architects must try to promote excellence in architecture through their work and encourage others too. They must also carry out their duties to the best of their ability and to the satisfaction of clients and have proper regard for the interests of all consumers. The code of conduct expects architects to conduct themselves with integrity and honesty. This is in line with RIBA codes of integrity. This makes them to honor architecture as a unique profession. They must not act in manners that will make put their profession into dispute. They must therefore, work with fairness and integrity. The Qatari architects’ code of conduct explains that architects (registered), do not have interest in personal or financial in connection with businesses that may turn out to be inconsistent with obligations of professional conduct and standards. The code also calls for architects to rely on performance, ability, and experience as the basis of advancement in business, and shall not criticize maliciously how other architects work. Finally, it states that an architect shall be disqualified to serve as director or partner of any practice of architecture proffering service to the public when he becomes a bankrupt or his application is not discharged or has his application rejected by the registration board of architects. The first standard in architecture is about integrity and honesty, where architects are at all times expected to act with honesty and integrity and avoid situations or actions inconsistent with professional obligations. Secondly, they need not make statements that are contrary to their professional opinion. This standard is in line with the AIA standard of integrity and honesty. The second standard examines competence of architects in Qatar. The same applies to AIA and RIBA codes of standards for architects. All architects must be competent in carrying out their work and be adequate to make appropriate arrangements in case of death, inability to work. All architects need to ensure that necessary communication skills and knowledge for discharging responsibilities is available. The third principle is relationships. All members must respect the opinions and beliefs of others, recognize their social diversity, and ensure that they treat all other architects fairly. It is also imperative that they have proper concern and regard for how their work affects their users ant the local community. The same principle also ensures that all members are aware of how their work impacts on the society. This particular standard is relatively similar to that of Qatar Architects’ governing body. In cases where members have an engagement in competition to win awards or work, they must ensure that it is done in a fair and honest manner with potential competitors and customers. The competition must also be transparent and reasonable, if it is not the case, all members must endeavor to ensure that they rectify or withdraw. RIBA codes This code explains the standards of professional conduct and practice that RIBA requires its members to follow to the latter. The code comprises three principles, which are professional conduct, professional values, which support the principles, and notes of guidance that explain the manner in which these principles must be upheld. More so, the RIBA pushes architects to be honest and follow all aspects of integrity in their line of duty. The Royal institute expects members to act with responsibility, fairness, impartiality and truthfulness at all times during their business activities and professional activities. They must not allow themselves to be influenced improperly by their own self-interest, should not be party to statements they know are not true, are misleading, and unfair to other architects contrary to their own knowledge of professionalism. Qatar architects’ third principle calls for honesty in service promotion. Both the RIBA and AIA maintain a standard in their operation. According to RIBA, architects need to avoid conflicts that show self-interest. In case conflict arises, the architects need to make a declaration to those affected parties and remove or withdraw their cause from the situation. RIBA also calls for members to have respect for privacy and confidentiality to others. Qatar architects professional codes does not allow architects to take bribes in order to carry out their duties as architects. This same ethical standard is part of principles of RIBA and AIA codes. AIA codes The AIA plays a significant role in International Code Council family codes development widely adopted in the USA and the world. The most common AIA code is code one which supports regulation by a single set of coordinated, comprehensive, and contemporary standards and codes, which establish sound threshold values of safety, health, and the protection of public welfare across the USA. Another common and upcoming code among policy makers in the international and local scenes is the out-come-based codes notion that assesses compliance of projects basing on actual performance, measured after construction is completed. Conclusion The Qatari code of conducts is in line with the RIBA and the AIA codes fully. The three bodies look into integrity of architects, honesty of the same, work ethics like promotion of practice without bribery, and professionalism when it comes to any form of architectural work. They three bodies of architectures promote proper behavior in architectural work, proper interrelations between workers, and trust amongst fellow architects.
