In this book, the primary importance was given to highlight the exact relationship between the Western diet and nutritionism in relation to provide a proper weightage to the fact that simply eating food does not mean one can become healthy. Rather one should practice the habit of consuming natural food products that should mostly consist of green vegetables. In this book, Pollan suggested the benefits of consumption of green vegetables and other related food products rather than nutrients based processed food items.

He argued that nutritional science should not be treated as a very important element because there are many evidences which prove that nutrients have not been defined specifically by the scientists (Pollan 1-25). He also highlighted the fact that more the focus is laid upon the consumption of nutrients by the Americans, the more will be the tendency of them becoming unhealthier.
