Extract of sample "South Korea Etiquette -Dos and Donts"

On how to relate inter-cultural and international business etiquette in South Korea, the following should be observed.
1. Do dress conservatively, mostly in a dark suit and a white shirt while avoiding jewelry apart from a watch and a wedding ring.
2. Do shake hands upon meeting. A bow is a way of greeting a person of lower status to one of higher status. It is important to note, due to Confucianism, empowering them makes them uncomfortable, as they will consider themselves in a lower position.
3. Punctuality is viewed as a measure of respect.
4. Eat everything served to you and never criticize their cuisine; it is a source of pride to them.
5. Do have a third party initiate business, as South Koreans prefer doing business with someone to whom they are connected.
6. Be direct and sincere, as they too are.

South Korean culture evolves around the themes of rules, tradition, and social code, it is, therefore, important to value them and show them. The culture revolves around group or collectiveness, it is therefore important never to single out anyone in a group and address them wholly. Remember also that South Korea has a long-term oriented culture, hence when presenting business modules to them take that into consideration.

Overall, I would be happy to elaborate on any point that seems ambiguous or any point you want to be clarified. Read More
