In order to become teachers, two basic requirements are Knowledge of content and Teaching-skills. Teaching has been accepted as an important profession, and professional training courses primarily include teaching methodologies for various subjects in addition to theoretical knowledge. Some universities have upgraded courses by adding uses of technology in education and development of professional personality of a teacher.
Each State or province usually has its own pattern, but to ensure a certain degree of maturity and sufficient content knowledge, most universities require a four-year degree course as the minimum qualification, and "with a specified distribution of courses". A course in teaching is necessary as part of professional training. There are regional variations in this pattern depending on the level of education and other policy matters. One more important factor regarding teaching is practical work. Students cannot be left to the mercy of an inexperienced teacher. Some states, therefore, insist on an internship program for a duration 3 months to one year, while others provide for teaching practice during the training course.
In New Jersey, all accredited colleges offering teacher education programs are affiliated to NJACTE (New Jersey Association of Colleges for Teacher Education), which is an organization that focuses on providing high-quality professional education to teachers through pre-service and in-service training programs. It provides an effective voice for teacher education at the state level on policy matters related to education.
