The researchers concluded that the negative correlation between the mandatory uniform policy and academic achievement was perhaps asymptomatic of the ‘quick fix nature’ of reform policies at schools. The author of this paper intends to demonstrate that the wearing of a uniform is but a drop in the bucket of methods of reducing the negativity associated with poor academic performance and behavior problems. In addition, claims of improving academic performance through the implementation of a uniform policy have strongly been refuted by researchers and educators alike.
This report approves that the uniform initiative should not be a ‘quick fix’ rather other initiatives such as ‘aggressive truancy reduction initiatives, drug prevention efforts, student-athlete drug testing, community efforts to limit gangs, a zero tolerance policy for weapons, character education classes, and conflict resolution programs’ can be used to improve behavioral problems at schools.
This paper makes a conclusion that consistent with the conclusion of Brunsma and Rockquemore, the author of this paper believes that although the use of uniforms may be one of the factors which contribute to academic success it does not cause the success. In the Long Beach positive results researchers noted that there were many other policies implemented simultaneously with the school uniforms. There have been a lot of valid issues raised by both the proponents and opponents in this debate, a factor, which has contributed to a delay in enacting and enforcing this policy. However, it is observable that some schools, especially private institutions, have taken the issue on their hands by introducing mandatory wearing of school uniforms for their students (Brunsma 18).
The then president Clinton, in 1995, visited Long Beach and urged all schools to consider following their footstep. The benefits of this policy were drafted in the manual on school uniforms, which under the president’s instruction was distributed to all district schools in the country.
A growing trend throughout the country in the last decade or so has been for a larger number of public school districts to implement either a very firm dress code or a uniform policy. Uniform policies are usually preferred by the majority of school districts because there is less opportunity for question and many benefits to the school and students
The author insists that wearing of school uniforms is essential as it enhances discipline among students. Parents and the society at large depends on the teachers to instill discipline in their children but they do very little to support teachers, who are sometimes overwhelmed by the large number of students constantly demanding their attention.
For instance, Great Britain is an apt example of a country where students are required to wear a uniform to school. School uniforms generally create a sense of uniformity and discipline in the school. When students are in the same clothes they feel that they are a part and parcel of each other. It creates an atmosphere of equality at school. Uniforms reduce the gap between the reach and the poor.
Schools benefit in areas of security and authority when all of the students follow a similar dress pattern. Students benefit by reducing the number of concerns they must deal with during school hours, freeing their minds to focus more on the academic issues they should be concerned with while attending classes.
The question as to whether students ought to wear a uniform to school do gives way to intense debates in academic and social circles. In many countries the school uniform is considered to be an integral aspect of the school life and students are expected to wear a uniform to school.
