Autism Spectrum Disorders: Interventions and Treatments for Children The book Autism Spectrum Disorders: Interventions and Treatments for Children and Youth has been written by Richard Simpson and coauthored by Sonja R. de Boer-Ott, Deborah Griswold and Brenda Smith Myles. The book provides extensive information about the treatment methods for individuals with ASD and guides teachers and parents to adopt the appropriate strategies and interventions for effective treatment of their children or students identified with the autism disorder spectrum. The book throws light upon the challenges and problems confronted by the parents of the children with autism. The authors strive to provide some guidelines for the parents and education professionals to deal adequately with the children and youngsters facing this disorder. There are several interventions available to deal with the children with autism however, choosing the most suitable is very important for the parents. The book helps making this selection by pointing towards the appropriate and simple strategies and treatment methods for the parents. Autism treatment is very broad issue and there is usually plenty of information found from different resources about its treatment however, the authors have made it very easy and accessible for the readers to get the information from five interventions categories explained separately in the book. The five interventions categories explicitly explained in the book in different chapters include “Interpersonal Relationships, Skill-Based Treatment Programs, Cognitive Methods, Physiological/Biological/Neurological Approaches, and Other Treatments and Interventions”. The authors straightforwardly describe the interventions by listing out the benefits and effects of each type of intervention and the potential costs and risks involved with each of the intervention category. In five chapters the authors have discussed almost 40 commonly used interventions and treatment methods for the autism individuals and evaluate these methods in terms of their utility and efficiency. Ideas Gained from the reading The book is very interesting and highly informative reading experience. It gives several valuable ideas and information about the possible ways of dealing with the individuals with ADS. It is worthwhile source of guidance and information for the parents having children with autism. In addition, the teaching professionals could also gain meaningful information from the book to prepare themselves for dealing with the children with ASD. The reading could significantly add to the understanding of proper way of dealing with children with ASD. There are certain important ideas gained from the book and the practical implication of the described interventions is also explained in the book making it easy to illustrate the potential outcomes of these interventions when applies to the classroom. After reading the book it became easy to deal with the children with ASD in the classroom because the book has provides several important tips for better dealing with these children. The reading of the book allows making well informed and well aware decisions about taking interventions for the treatment of children with ASD. The practice in the classroom would also be highly affected from this reading because after reading this book it has become possible to figure out the right way of treatment of children with ASD. The book tells about holding therapy and gentle teaching intervention that are very interesting and practical approached towards ASD treatment. The book also tells about the importance of communication, relationship building and play oriented strategies that can help in effective treatment of the children with ASD. Furthermore, the descriptions about different therapies like music therapy, art therapy and megavitamin therapy provide ample information and guidance to deal with the children with autism. Personal Opinion In my personal opinion, the book possesses great values and importance for the teachers and parents because it very well guides them to help their children with autism in reaching their full potential. The information provided in the book has been simply formatted and written so that the parents of the children with autism could easily understand it without facing difficulties of terminologies or complications. It is very helpful resource of selecting the appropriate method for ASD treatment. The book answers several concerns and complex questions of the parents and teachers that they face while dealing with their children. The authors provide simple and straight answers and solutions to all their problems and questions. The information presented in the book is well organized and easy understandable. The organization of information in five different sections makes reading and understanding the book very easy. The interventions provided in the book are also very simple and in the daily life the parents and teachers could adopt these interventions without the need of getting any special training from any professional or healthcare center. The reading could enable the parents and teachers to develop and polish their skills of dealing the ASD patients in appropriate manner. It could be seen as a wake-up call because the authors have thrown light upon the importance of dealing with children with ASD in appropriate manner so that the society could be benefited in term of efficient role of the individuals with ASD. The authors have competency to write upon this subject matter and thus, the information could be deem as credible and reliable source of information on this subject. Conclusion It is unveiled from the reading of the book that the treatment of individuals with ASD is very complex and sensitive matter. The role of parents and teachers possess great importance in this scenario because they have the responsibility and potential to bring the individuals with ASD towards the normal life style. In this context, the book gives a helping hand to the teachers and parents and act as guide to lead them towards the right way of dealing with children with ASD. The book describes different practical and strategic interventions in simple and workable manner and also allows the teachers and parents to think about the possible outcomes of different interventions. The authors have done great job to put very important things about ASD treatment at one platform. This is a remarkable contribution made to the literature focusing upon ASD treatment. This step will not only provide benefit to the children with autism and their parents and teachers but the entire society could be avail the benefit of this work because the book creates awareness among the people about appropriate methods of treating ASD and bringing best out of the individuals facing this disorder.
