This will make learning more interesting and fun for the children.
Although I have not had an encounter with children in a classroom setup, I have had some experiences that have prepared me for this program. The first is my interactions with my close family members. Both my parents and my five siblings are teachers and my interactions with them have taught me lot about children and their needs. My experience with my niece and my nephew has also been very relevant in preparing me for this program. Having been with them from birth and over the years as they grow, my experience with them has taught me to love children, listen to them and be patient with them under various physical and emotional states. I have always learnt to apply this patience when teaching them various skills like reading, drawing, writing and singing.
Being with them has also made me develop great interest in drawing and painting and many times, I have learnt how to use drawing and painting as a therapy tool for my niece who struggled with low self-esteem and was somehow aggressive. Information from Art Therapy (2006) reveals that art gives people the opportunity to express the powerful emotions and finished artwork forms the basis of discussing issues they face. By offering her art exercises that help to regulate and calm the mind and body, she has become very peaceful. Her self-perception has improved and this has made her more cheerful. These have improved her personal interactions, confidence and academic performance. I, therefore, expect to learn more on this through this program.
At the same time, this experience with them has not only built in me a great interest for child play but also the desire to play with children. I am, therefore, confident of becoming an active participant in the life of the children I will be teaching on completing this program both in indoor and outdoor activities.
