According to a recent statistics, “1 in 2 students experience occasional bullying during any school term. Moreover, 1 in 4 students in primary school are bullied more than once or twice at least in any term”(Statistics on Bullying, n. d.). According to Dune et al. (2010), “Bullying, aggression and other forms of violence in schools can blight student experiences of formal education and their abilities to make the best of the opportunities they have” (Dune et al, 2010, p.1). There are many cases in which school bullying cased not only psychological problems such as depression but also suicide tendency as well. In short, bullying should be prohibited in school compounds at any cost. This paper reviews the available literature to find out what intervention can a Case planner use with 12 grade students in a Long Island, Commack- New York day program classroom to discourage the issue of bullying with students. Physical bullying can be prevented up to certain extent by taking actions against unnecessary gang formation in schools. “Verbal bullying is name-calling, making offensive remarks, or joking about a person's religion, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or the way they look” (Types of bullying, n. d.). It is an act of teasing. It is normally performed by a group of people upon an individual. Verbal bullying can lead towards physical assaults or physical bullying. Verbal bullying usually develops psychological problems such as depression, anxiety etc. to the victim. It can cause loss of interest in studies and other daily activities. Schools should implement a code of conduct for in order to avoid verbal bullying. “Social alienation is when a bully excludes someone from a group on purpose. It also includes a bully spreading rumours, and also making fun of someone by pointing out their differences” (Types of bullying, n. d.). It is an act of isolation. In social bullying, the offenders will prevent the victim from interacting with others. Offenders normally spread fabricated stories about the victim so that nobody will try to mingle with the victim. Schools should take stern actions against those who try to isolate somebody from the main streams of school life. “92 students aged 11-16 from 14 London schools completed a survey on bullying. 22% had experienced cyber bullying at least once. 6.6% had experienced being bullied in this way in the previous two months” (International Network, 2010). However, it does not have to be a pattern, nor does it needs to be distinctive. Indeed many will be victims of bullying without awareness of the fact. A similar scenario can be true of the bullies as well. This paper will discuss bullying at its various levels and types and the modern forms of bullying namely, cyber bullying.
It has become a virtually indispensable tool in education, entertainment, government, and business world (Willard, 2007). While it has become critical in the daily lives of adults, the internet has also become a major part of the children’s lives. Children use the internet for education purposes, online communication and social networking.
When they were finished, they shot themselves. The high school was Columbine in Littleton, Colorado and Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris wrote in journals that they had been bullied and this was the reason that they went on the shooting spree. Since that time, there have been more school shootings and more suicides for one reason or another, and many of them were the result of children being bullied over time Klomek, Sourander, & Gould, 2010).
The prevalence rate of bullying has gone up in many social circles as it is seen as normal in everyday society. In institutions, many consider it a rite of passage as students are initiated into society by their peers after going through different sorts of bullying.
According to the paper a number of challenges and defining moments characterizes school and college life, most of which affects negatively on the development of the student and the success of the school. Most of the acts are perpetuated by fellow students without the knowledge of the school administration resulting into extensive abuse and torture. One of the aggressive acts committed by students on fellow students is bullying, a pervasive act that has a number of both emotional, psychological impacts on the growth and learning of students.
In its extreme cases, it can push the victims to the youths to become suicidal, and still; in other extreme cases, the bullying can get out of hand and end up with the situation where the victims are murdered by the bullies. Bullying is also a major problem for teachers and parents, because stopping it can be extremely delicate – especially to the victims of bullying.
Since childhood is the most vulnerable period in anyone’s life, due to the newness of the real world, the most impact is made by the experiences of this phase. Where positive experience are ideal for a healthy psychological development, negative experiences lead to severe damaging psychological affects in a child’s life when he steps into adolescent age and it is cemented in his adulthood.
