The issue to be addressed by our program will be effects of substance abuse and the resultant effects on work, school and homes located in urban areas. The stake holders in this intervention include; the government, the community, the parents, peer supporters, social marketers, health promoting schools. Substance Abuse Epidemiology People with admitted with substance abuse problems are found to have waited for an average of 15.2 years to find assistance from the first time they got involved with the substance. The study of over 320,000 adults has shown that males fitting the above description took longer to find help. On average it took them 17.2 years. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration puts people in this category who have abused alcohol have 19.8 years as the number of years they have waited before seeking for treatment; on the other hand it took approximately 8 years for people who abused prescription painkillers to seek help. These figures indicate that substance abuse related problems can be undetected for a long time pausing a serious threat to the affected person’s health and to those around them. ...
Over 3 $ 1.5 million teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 abuse tobacco, this statistics represent 15% of teenagers of that age group. Of that age group, 13% or 3 million abuse cigarettes and most of them fall under this target population. In America half a million people are killed by tobacco. Tobacco kills more people than all other addictive drugs put together. In every occurrence of 6 deaths, one is related to tobacco abuse. Substance abuse etiology Research studies done for over 25 years have related heavy smoking amongst teenagers to agoraphobia which is the fear of going outside. Panic attacks occur 15 times more often amongst teens who smoke. They also experience anxiety disorders and depression. Tobacco Control The objective of this research is to reduce tobacco use and those problems related there of such as disability, death and diseases by preventing initiation into its usage, encourage quitting and ensure non tobacco user’s are not exposed to the tobacco smoke. Georgia tobacco use and prevention program has been used to address the use of tobacco among teenagers and this can be our perfect model in designing intervention mechanisms efficient enough to address tobacco abuse among members of our target group. The program aims to minimize the use of tobacco and the associated burdens arising from diseases caused by its use through designing strategies in tobacco control and prevention through providing adequate technical assistance and training on issues related to policies, strategies dealing with communication, program intervention and providing information dealing with tobacco issues (Green & Kreuter, 1999).
