Urban school districts are deemed as failing schools. It brings about teacher frustration as we try to concentrate on resolving the multitude of issues and gaining little ground year after year. In this paper, I have research the problem of student motivation. I wanted to know what additional instructional strategies engage students as well as any incentive system that would influence their participation. In this study, I included different rewards both intrinsic and extrinsic in trying to improve participation in preparation for an upcoming professional certification exam. Keeping the students engaged with their learning would bring success and value to their education. Subsequently, this could be behavior modification for the classroom. Urban Student’s Focus on Education: Recognizing Benefits of Engaging in Learning In a school’s computer lab, students are posting on their Facebook pages and listening to music. No this is not a study or the library, but a computer lab in an urban setting during classroom instruction. How do we enhance student’s motivation toward learning? With so many obstacles present in the urban school districts such as poverty, lack of parental involvement, high drop rates, substance abuse and gang involvement, it is a struggle to get students to recognize the need for education. The level of student engagement is directly connecting to teaching practices (Adkins-Coleman, 2010). As a teacher, you are responsible for classroom management and the instruction that you provide to your students. If you can engage your students in the classroom and motivate them to learn; this will assist in behavior management and move the students toward academic success. With behavior being an obstacle in a classroom, how are new teachers prepared to work in an urban environment? To prepare future teachers more adequately for urban schools, teacher educators need to provide the opportunity for them to learn from teachers who successfully facilitate engagement (Adkins-Coleman, 2010). Schools need to find appropriate mentors for new teachers as well as provide professional development to educational staff with new instructional strategies for the classroom. The level of student engagement is evidenced by completing assignments, class participation and test results. Students need to believe that they can succeed and that their teachers have high expectations for their learning. Teachers may succumb to the challenges in an urban school and lose the desire to provide positive instruction for their students. The school administration needs to understand and support the teacher preparation programs that are meaningful for the environment of the school. Pre-service teachers need concrete pictures of what facilitating engagement looks like in practice to be ready to accept the challenges of urban teaching (Adkins-Coleman, 2010). Subsequently, with movies such as Waiting for Superman, the educational system in America needs to be changed. Not all schools and educators provide a quality educational experience. Most disadvantaged high school students are likely to be taught academic core subjects by uncertified, less experienced teachers (Martin J. Ward, 2009). Educators are responsible for following curriculum and teaching according to their state’s standards. The present study examined four variables, namely student relationship with their parents, relationship with classmates, academic self-concept and level of life satisfaction or poverty level as the predictors of students’ behavior problems.
The objectives of this research are to research of the strategies that can prove to be fruitful for motivating the resistant elementary school students, establish a guide for the teachers to implement these strategies that has come under studies and research, assess the impact of the developed strategies for motivating the resistant students of elementary schools.
The foundation of the education monument is the high school education. Therefore, every child must thrive to complete their high school education in order to be able to get into college and then further higher education. To put this into perspective, a recent report by the US Department of Education showed that the median income of persons aged 18 to 67 who had not completed high school was $23,000 in 2008, while that of persons having completed at least their high school was $42,000 (NCES, 2010).
The notion in maintaining interpersonal connections is that weak connection offers more leverage when the weak connection is not linked to powerful connection, as could be possible in the case of maintained high school links. Also, some students have established friendly relationships with teachers. The high preference for feedback from teachers apparently results from students’ positive attitudes and comments about the teachers’ feedback.
For decades, different studies have identified intrinsic motivation as a desire of engaging in some behaviors with only the intention of gaining sheer enjoyment, pleasure, challenge, or interest. The concept of internal motivation originated from research, and the Skinnerian heyday though, and as a contrasting idea towards the motivation given by the common modification of programs.
As students keep advancing from one stage to another, a myriad of challenges are faced especially when it is a completely new level. For instance, high school students face various challenges in trying to adjust to college-level writing.
According to the report this hierarchy and power inequality leads to repetitive aggression towards the weak which is defined as bullying. Despite the fact that all people have witnessed the act of bullying at school at least once in their life, not all of them understand the consequences of this aggression for bullies and their victims.
