This paper seeks to examine and analyze policy in the United Kingdom relating to the wellbeing of families and children with emphasis on the ‘Every Child Matters’ policy, as well as children social policy issues, such as children poverty, children abuse, and children health inequalities. In essence, social policy refers to the policies that governments institute to promote social and welfare protection. In other words, a social policy refers to the way in which development of societal welfare takes place. Thus, social policy specifically concerns with the welfare state and social services. In another broader sense, social welfare refers to the range of issues that extend beyond government’s actions: they include the means by promotion of welfare occurs, as well as economic and social conditions that shape the development of welfare. This paper seeks to examine the children social policy in the United Kingdom since the rise to power by the New Labour party in 1997. The paper specifically focuses on policies regarding children poverty, children abuse, and children health inequality. The paper adopts a right-based approach, using discourse from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (Baldock, Manning, and Vickerstaff, 2007:124).
