The book reveals the thoughts, words and music of Chicano and Latino youth culture as they try to inculcate themselves in American society but at times are held back by their consciousness of a unique identity, language and social hierarchy.
The result of the findings is that identity is formed through historical events, immigration status, and proximity to the Mexican border, language, culture, generation status, gender, and popular culture. The politics of identity along the Mexican border, as evaluated by the book, influence the Mexicana/o and Chicana/o identity construction, and they include the past, present, and future discrimination encountered in the United States.
