ATTACHMENT A - RESEARCH PROPOSAL of Candi Degree pursued: Faculty: of Proposal: Technologically Preparing Muslims For Performing HajjOr Umrah Abstract (no less than 200 words):Many learning materials to prepare Muslims for hajj have existed in written and also audio and video form, but they are typically based on the practice of passive learning. Multimedia technologies and especially virtual environments could have the potential to provide a much more effective way of preparing for the hajj by providing interactive opportunities and immersive experiences, and thereby enhancing understanding.

Yusoff et al. (2011) attempted to devise such courseware in Malaysia although the focus was on assisting elders in using computer technology as a supplementary resource mainly using principles of persuasive technology. More effective learning material is needed due to a lack of information, misunderstanding and communication difficulties with other pilgrims and organizers (Hameed, 2010).The proposed study will investigate the need for, potential and establish the importance and effectiveness of multimedia technology for preparing Muslims for performing hajj or Umrah in the form of education and guidance.

The primary aim will be to satisfy essential requirements first, such as knowing the procedure with respect to religious and historical knowledge as well as the whereabouts of important places such as the black stone, the commemoration spot of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), and Safa and Marwa. In addition, performers would need to know about the transportation and health care facilities, toilets, and emergency and fatwa stations. The study will involve a field survey of Malaysians, and may also lead to the development of an application software for evaluating its potential and effectiveness, and for providing additional services, such as real-time guidance during the hajj or Umrah.

Description of Proposal:1)Literature review2)Research Problem/Issue3)Research Objectives4)Methodology (with justification) 1. Literature ReviewThis section will cover purposes of the agreed multimedia technology for preparing Muslims for performing hajj or Umrah in the form of education and guidance.2. ProblemAccording to Yusoff et al. (2011), most learning materials which are meant to prepare Muslims for hajj exist only in written and also audio and video form; however, they are normally based on the practice of passive learning.

It is believed that multimedia technologies and, in particular, virtual surroundings can offer a much better way of preparing Muslims for hajj through offer interactive chances and immersive experiences, and; therefore, easing understanding. Hameed (2010) believes that we need more effective learning material because of the lack of information, misinterpretation and communication challenges with other organizers and pilgrims.3. Research Objectivesa) To develop an application software for evaluating its potential and effectiveness, and for providing additional services, such as real-time guidance during the hajj or Umrah.b) To explore the importance and usefulness of multimedia technology for training Muslims for performing Umrah or hajj in the form of guidance and education.c) To indentify necessary requirements like knowing the procedure with regard to historical and religious knowledge.d) To discuss the transportation and health care facilities, toilets, and fatwa and emergency stations.4. MethodologyTo attain these objectives, the research will incorporate a mixed methodology.

Both quantitative and qualitative techniques will be employed that will strengthen data obtained from Hameed (2010) and Yusoff et al. (2011). The reason for employing both quantitative and qualitative method is that this design is that it better validates the findings.Participants of this study will mostly be Muslim students because they are a much cheaper participants to reach and also their minds are fresh of the Muslim way of life thus using them will be more effective.Data collection will be conducted in mainly two ways, interviews and also reviewing other literature Hameed (2010) and Yusoff et al. (2011).Keywords:Hajj , Umrah, Multimedia Technology, MuslimObjectives:a) To develop an application software for evaluating its potential and effectiveness, and for providing additional services, such as real-time guidance during the hajj or Umrah.b) To explore the importance and usefulness of multimedia technology for training Muslims for performing Umrah or hajj in the form of guidance and education.c) To indentify necessary requirements like knowing the procedure with regard to historical and religious knowledge.d) To discuss the transportation and health care facilities, toilets, and fatwa and emergency stations.
