The American system of education has been admired even by the international students and therefore this topic will help in understanding how the system works. It is also important to know the schools or colleges that one can afford to pay for the tuition fee. This topic entails how the levels of education flow and when and how to enroll in any school. American system of education has a wide range of choices for all the students. It is important to understand the system before enrolling. In understanding the system, it helps in narrowing the choices you have and this is a major concern. In choosing a school, the parents must choose a safe neighborhood. The US has one of the best educational systems because it ensures the children receive quality education. The education structure starts from the primary level. The students attend primary and secondary in a total of twelve years. Students start at elementary school for five or six years and then join secondary school (USA, 2015). This is when mandatory schooling begins. The first level in high school is the middle school or junior high school and later high school where upon completion a certificate or diploma is awarded. Most high schools provide progressive courses which are compared to first year of college. A student repeats a grade because of low marks or prolonged absence from school. A student can drop out at sixteen, it is discouraged. The academic year in higher education level starts in August or September. It takes four years to complete a bachelor’s degree. In the first years the student takes a wider range of classes. After the undergraduate level someone can decide to continue to master’s program. This takes one or two years to complete. There are several types of higher education in US. It is after all this that an individual chooses to purse a postgraduate degree. The education system in the US want to make sure that every child is well educated. Every educator feels the need to improve the system though it has received a lot of challenges. Some subcultures do not see the value for education and that some children are given wrong messages at home that school is not important. Some of the values for schooling need to be instilled from the homes. Some schools provide for transport although it may be for certain ages or schools. At the primary and secondary levels school is mandatory. Again first grade is compulsory. President Obama has felt the need for the federal government to pay the tuition for students in community colleges (Heintz, 2015). The federal government is not involved in the payment of school fees for students. Schools are financed by the tax payers’ money. Tuition for the public schools is free although the parents are often required to pay extra expenses for programs like music. Majority of the students attend schools that are in their neighborhood. Those who attend private schools come from affluent families that will afford the tuition for private schools. Parents who decide not to send their children to local public schools use a voucher plan to get help to subsidize private school fee. In the higher education there is the liberal arts degree and pre-professional degree. The difference is the liberal arts education offers a broad training that tries to make the student a well-rounded and educated member of the society. Liberal arts school often has a minimum grade requirement in order to stay in the program. The competition in pre-professional school is more intense than in the liberal school. Pre-professional education can enhance liberal education without becoming the substitute for if. The liberal art has been providing a pre-professional training for the unanticipated professions. Students who study liberal arts and science courses do better in terms of increase in skills than those who take undergraduate courses in pre-professional fields. Two-year colleges are the leading providers of liberal arts education. Liberal acts require a depth in study enables students to choose and encourages interdisciplinary. Liberal arts give students a basis for everything. However liberal arts education has no association with the hard sciences like mathematics. Somebody in the liberal arts major pursues units such as political sciences. Students majoring in liberal arts do not have a clear career path. A great number of CEO’s added technical training skills to a degree in liberal arts education. In another perspective liberal arts school offers a flexible route where basic skills on critical thinking and learning can be used in multiple fields. On the other hand, the pre-professional education correlates directly to a specialized area and specific career opportunities. Liberal arts education prepares the students for change. Anthony Marx says that whenever you use your undergraduate years in preparing for your profession, you will risk preparing for a lifelong career and miss learning how to think. Some of the liberal arts education also offers pre-professional advising in certain areas such as law. Although the pre-professional education lacks the flexibility of a liberal arts education, it offers a direct path for those who clearly know what they want. In addition, a pre-professional school doesn’t mean that there won’t be any liberal art aspects. There is a common myth that liberal arts degree is not adequate for a professional graduate school (Pak, 2015). However, liberal arts considered a great preparation for law school. This is because it develops close text reading, critical thinking and analysis of contexts. In studying a course like architecture, we look at the disparities between the two forms of education. It is also known as four-two involves first getting a pre-professional architectural course. Pre-professional degrees are undertaken within four years which prepares the student to pursue a professional degree. Most of the degrees are within the universities that offer professional degree. However, some are also offered in four year liberal schools (Waldrep, 2010). In order to get a license for architecture you need to study and pursue the pre-professional degree. Early segments of the curriculum both pre-professional design and liberal arts, can serve as a base for many environmental designs. One of the goals of liberal arts education is refining students thinking skills.
