Speech/Presentation Good afternoon, dear audience. I want to introduce you the topic of my speech, which is as follows: “Outdoor Activities. Hiking in the Mountains”. During my presentation, I would like to tell about the following things: an interesting and popular form of leisure such as mountain hiking; equipment, which should take a tourist, hiking in the mountains; risks, arising during an ascension to the mountain; actions that help to avoid this risks and enjoy climbing. I chose this topic because more and more people prefer to spend their holidays in this way. With increasing of the urbanization process, more and more people are trying to get out to nature. However, it is understood that going to such hikes is a serious event, which can be dangerous for health and life. Therefore, if you decide to go to the mountains, you need to know the following important information that helps you to backpack successfully and prevent all possible misfortunes. Hike in the mountains is a wonderful rest. However, in order to avoid some troubles and difficulties during a hike, it is necessary to observe a few important rules. Even experienced climbers often are hesitant to go to the mountains alone. The minimum of tourist group for hike in the mountains is two or three people, and at least two of them must be men. Warn your relatives or acquaintances that are going camping. You should provide at least approximate date of your return. The minimum set of equipment for each member of the expedition should include a flashlight and extra batteries to it, reliable lighter or a box of matches, a hunting knife, necessary amount of food and water, first aid kit and a tent. No matter how it is hot, tourists need to have tightly woven clothing: long pants and a jacket or sweater with long sleeves. It is advisable to buy special clothes for hiking in specialized stores. Tissue and cut of such clothes fit ideal for outdoor activities in the mountains. Footwear is a very important part of outfit in such campaigns. In order to avoid accidents during the trip, it is important to buy special sports footwear with a dense outsole that does not slide on the rocks and do not allow tourists to fall. Durable, comfortable hiking shoes or even high mountain boots will be a good choice. Such footwear can also help to avoid the bites of poisonous insects and snakes. Climbing the mountain, an expedition should move up the river. It is allow not getting lost. If there is no river, choose a well-trodden tourist paths or hunting trail. If the feeling that you got lost appears, the main thing is do not panic. In such situation, people usually as soon as instinctively pulling down. However, the descent ahead, in a hurry, is fraught with the fact that you get into the thorns. Usually, at the bottom of mountain there is impassable jungle of thorns. In addition, there is a danger to meet wild animals. On the contrary, try to climb to the top of the mountain. Firstly, it is possible to see and calculate the direction of motion. Second, it is usually not one but several trails converge at the top so you most likely can even choose which one is most comfortable for the descent. It should be remembered one more important rule, which is used by famous mountaineers and explorers. In the mountains, you cannot lose altitude. If you want to change the route, try to go at the same level that has already overcome, because a new rise takes a lot of effort and they could not stay for the end of the campaign. Perhaps the most serious difficulty on the mountain route is an abrupt change in the weather. Thunderstorms gather in a few hours, and they cannot be seen because you are not in an open area. If you appear caught in a storm, in any case cannot hide under overhanging rocks and near falls; you cannot escape from the storm, and even just to keep moving. The soil is quickly becoming slippery, almost like ice, and you can be seriously injured. You cannot go to an open flat area when the storm caught you, for example, on top of the mountain. You also cannot come too close to the watercourse of the rivers, streams, even if they are parched, because they are instantly filled with rainwater and become murky mudflows, bearing rocks, sharp twigs and so on at high speed. Certainly, you should try to construct canopy of available material such as twigs, branches, broadleaved grass and others, or you should put the tent on a flat place. You can also hide under thick boxwood trees, which are never hit by lightning. Tourists should wait out the bad weather, without moving, until it is over and a lull comes. You can then return by the same route, observing extreme caution. It is very important to be careful in the mountains and to comply with the above rules, because during my first campaign with a group of six people, we came under heavy rain and fog, and one of the participants of the tour slipped and hurt his leg. We hardly went down to the bottom of the mountain and get to the nearest village to provide medical assistance to the injured. It was difficult challenge, and our rest was spoiled. To close my speech, I would like to tell that such outdoor hikes could be very interesting and exciting on the condition that you are ready for it and follow the rules of behavior in the mountains. During my speech, I told about popular form of leisure such as mountain hiking; listed what a tourist need to take with; described possible risks in hiking; presented the information about how to avoid these risks and make the hike successful. Thank you for your attention, I hope that this presentation was interesting and useful for you. Read More
