Citizens have different opinions about the reasons for the widening of this gap and it is only after several educators understood the reasons behind the existence of the achievement gap in the U.S. that different strategies were adopted to diminish this difference.
According to the National Centre for Education Statistics, the achievement gap “occurs when one group of students outperforms another group of students and the difference in average scores for the two groups is statistically significant” (NCES, 2015).
