Intellectual Autobiography My story

At SERE, the various programs that I underwent there taught me about survival and evasion techniques; resistance and escape maneuvering as well as water survival. They trained me on camouflage techniques, methods of evasion and emergency first aid ways. The program aimed at how to survive and how to resist when one was under enemy captivity. Water survival was a three-day course that spoke about how to survive in an aquatic environment. It was a course that imparted skills necessary to survive in the hostile environments. It was in the SERE library where I read a book With the Old Breed by E.B Sledge that gave me some glimpses about the horrors of war. Sledge has given some of the terrifying account of the war in this book. In 1945, his team was assigned the task of wresting the Peleliu Island from 135,000 well-armed Japanese soldiers. The Battle of Peleliu was known to have inflicted one of the highest casualties to the American military. Over 9,800 soldiers either died or severely wounded due to over confidence or poor understanding on the Part of US Marine; however, learning experience from the mistakes helped naval commanders to face the situation more favorably later in Philippines. The training programs that I took at Black water and Aviation Ordnance School made me disciplined as far as body fitness was concerned. Running several miles a day and weight lifting exercises soon became my hobby and that taught me how to keep body fit and muscular. At age 22, I found myself completely fit for boxing and I decided to undergo professional boxing training. Agility and swiftness in the body is a must that is what I learned there. Within a year and half, weight lifting and specific muscle improvement exercises enhanced my punch power significantly that earned me several laurels in my university years. Soon I realized that sporting activity was not to be performed with the sole aim of winning opponent but many important factors such as maintaining body fitness at all age could be fulfilled through this. My brief stint at Naval Base Coronado at the pacific coast has provided me great insights as to how emergency operations are managed. Emergencies may strike suddenly without any pre-signals and compel us to either evacuate our neighborhood or confine ourselves to our homes. It is quite likely that relief workers cannot reach scene immediately after a disaster. ‘Operation Prepare’ is the program that prepares us in advance to handle impending emergencies with calm and alertness. Such programs secure us and our family. Working as a senior Petty Officer for last couple of years in the US navy, I have been fortunate enough to observe closely and understand the nitty-gritty of the operations. The various training programs that I have undergone through have imparted me many skills and an opportunity to advance further. Fitness Reports (FITREPS) are important as that reflects how well one performs one's job and what qualities one brings to the job. As one moves upward in job responsibilities, one needs to display leadership qualities because that finally decides about key future assignments. At times, self-evaluation helps a lot in improving one's own weaknesses. Strong communication is one of the essential qualities that one needs to develop as early as possible. My pursuing BA in General Studies has helped me strengthen my portfolio and widened my scope. Though all these years I have been associated with the US naval operations and have gone ...Show more
