? Becoming a teacher al Affiliation: Introduction A teacher refers to an individual who offers education for or pupils depending on the level of education they are in. Most of the times, the role of a teacher is official and constant. The process of providing information is often carried out in education institutions which are also referred to as schools. In most countries all over the globe, an individual who aspires to be a teacher has to obtain some specified credentials from a college or a university to qualify as one. A teacher always uses a lesson plan for facilitation of student learning, offering a course study referred to as a curriculum. A curriculum according to formal education refers to planned interaction of students and pupils with materials, instructional content, resources and process for the purpose of evaluating the achievement of educational goals. Other definitions used to refer to curriculum include: All the education processes which are deliberated and guided by the education institution, whether it is performed individually or in groups, within or outside the institutional compound. Outlines the values, performances, skills, and attitudes pupils are expected to learn from the process of schooling. It comprises of statements of required pupil outcomes, the planned sequence and descriptions of materials that will be needed and implemented to help students achieve their goals. The total education experience provided by an educational institution. It includes the syllabus, the strategies and other aspects, like values and norms in an educational environment. The roles of teachers vary among cultures since they engage in provision of education but under different fields. Teachers may therefore provide information in different fields including: arts, civics, literacy, numeracy, life skills and community roles. All these fields are covered in educational institutions where teachers provide information in regards to their areas of specialisation. It is in this case clear that, teachers graduate from their various colleges and universities having specialised in certain fields (Vygotsky, 1978, 48). This is the reason why a teacher is not able to provide education on all the subjects covered in educational institutions. These areas of specialisation that teachers provide information on are referred to as curriculum subjects. They are the units that students and pupils learn in various institutions. For a teacher to be enrolled in a certain educational institution, there are various standards that should be met. There are rules and regulations that govern teachers for them to carry out effective teaching making certain that all the pupils and students are well taught and that they get to understand what they are being taught (Piaget, 2001. 65). Every teacher here in the United Kingdom is expected to follow these rules and regulations to the latter. This essay seeks to explain the strategies of teaching and learning that can be implemented in English language. As a teacher i intend to implement learning and teaching strategies that will make my class understand everything in the English unit and do well in their exams at the end of the day. In teaching there are various rules and regulations that should be followed in order to make teaching effective. These standards should be followed and kept by all teaching staff. This gives a clear impression that teachers have to keep certain standards of behaviour in their working areas to make certain that their teaching undertakings are effective enough to students and pupils (Alexander, 2010, 76). Teachers are important individuals in the society because they offer knowledge to pupils and students which mould them for better future. This is an issue which makes them to be viewed as important people because without them, students and pupils cannot acquire knowledge needed in life. In this case, they are considered individuals who take part in hard work especially teachers in the lower levels where the pupils are so young that they do not know how to read and write. For a teacher to make that pupils know how to read and write perfectly, it requires hard work. Generally their work is not so easy and that is why they need to implement strategies and keep certain behavioural standards for them to work effectively. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) are rules and regulations that usually guide teachers on how to undertake their operations in their various working stations (Department for Education and Skills, 2004, 59). Teachers’ Standards in the United Kingdom Teachers are expected to show their first concern on the education of their pupils and students. They are supposed to achieve the highest standards possible for effective teaching. In teaching, it is a must for them to have the following measures taken into consideration for effective learning here in the United Kingdom to take place. The key standards are: Every state-funded educational institution must offer a curriculum which is balanced. The curriculum has to promotes the moral, spiritual, physical, cultural and mental and development of pupils at the school and of society. The standards should also prepare pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. All state schools are also required to make provision for a daily act of collective worship and must teach religious education to pupils at every key stage and sex education to pupils in secondary education. Apart from these major standards, there are other QTS standards that teachers in the United Kingdom should take into consideration and implement them for effective teaching. These standards include: 1. Set expectations that are high to challenge, motivate and inspire the students. They should carry out the following responsibilities: Make sure that they establish a safe environment for all the pupils. Should also set goals that challenge all the pupils irrespective of their gender, dispositions and backgrounds because they are all intended to work hard and excel in which there is no exception. Have attitudes towards everything they teach so that the pupils can also avoid developing any negative attitude towards certain units in class. 2. Promote good development and outcome in pupils. They are expected to: Be accountable for the pupils’ and students’ performance and progress in class. Be aware of the pupils’ capability in class so that they can plan their teaching strategies based on these capabilities (Bruner, 1986, 43). Guide all the students and pupils in reflecting on their performance in class so that they can work on their weaknesses effectively to improve. Demonstrate on knowledge and understanding of pupils so as to know its impacts on teaching. Encourage the students and pupils on taking their work seriously and have conscientious attitude. 3. Demonstrate good curriculum and subject knowledge. Here they are expected to Have knowledge on the relevant curriculum areas and maintain the interest of the students in these areas. Take responsibility for promotion of high standards of articulacy and literacy, including the correct use of language. Demonstrate clear understanding of teaching strategies when teaching those who are in early stages of learning. 4. Plan and teach lessons that are well structured. In this case they are supposed to: Use the lesson time effectively to impart acquaintance and build up understanding. Set work to be done at home and plan for other classes outside class for extensive knowledge and understanding in students (Kramsch, 1998, 90). Have systematic reflection on the lessons and methodologies used in teaching. Provide an engaging curriculum in the important subjects. 5. Use methodologies that respond to the needs of all the students. What is expected of them here is: Use methodologies that enable them to differentiate all the pupils for effective teachings. Have knowledge on how to deal with factors that contribute to slow learning by pupils. Have knowledge on all the needs of the students including the special needs, additional languages so that it can be easy for evaluation and choosing the best methods of teaching. Demonstrate awareness of the social, physical and intellectual progress of students and know what effective teaching adaptation to take. 6. Make accurate They should: Know how to access the relevant subject areas. Make use of summative and formative assessment to check and secure the progress of the pupils. Use important data to set targets and plan for all subsequent lessons. Give the students regular feedback through accurate marking and orally to encourage them. 7. Manage behaviour effectively to make sure that the student have a safe learning environment. They should establish the following: Make sure that routines and rules for behaviours are clear enough for promotion of courteous behaviour around the school and in class (Cummins, 1996, 84). Have expectations of behaviour that are high and give rewards and disciplines fairly. Maintain good relationship with all the students. 8. Fulfil wide professional responsibilities They should: Make contribution to the culture of the school. Establish effective relationships with their colleagues. Deploy the support staff in an effective manner. Take up the responsibility for improving teaching through professional establishment responding to advice from colleagues. Have effective communication with parents and guardians in regards to the performance of the students. English is used in the contemporary society because it entails language that is used to communicate with others in everyday life. This means that i have to work extra hard because i am taking a unit that is used in everyday life communication. I will therefore use all the strategies to make certain that my students have an ample time in future communicating with each other and individuals from various parts of the world for easy understanding. It is a language that is widely used here in the United Kingdom meaning individuals who reside in this region should have knowledge of it. Taking this unit i therefore have to make sure that my students understand this language well Conclusion There are various standards that teachers should keep in order to make their practice in school effectives. Parents depend on teachers to equip their kids in the right way so as to prepare them for a better future by offering them knowledge. In this case, it is clear that teachers are expected to play a key role in making sure that their students and pupils follow the right track in their studies. This is because pupils and students are individuals who are expected to be future leaders and in the contemporary society it is difficult to live without having knowledge. This is the reason why people attend school because without knowledge in the current society it is hard to move on and have comfortable life without knowledge from school. To get jobs and earn money it is necessary for an individual to attend school because jobs offered are given depending on the level and performance in school. There are certain grades that an individual should attain in order to get a job. This mean that without school, people are not able to qualify for some jobs and this explains why there are jobless people in the society today. It is in this case, clear that education is important. Though it is expensive, parents usually sacrifice what they have to make sure that their kids go to school and attain knowledge required to move on with life like other people. This shows that parents are caring because they know that without knowledge their kids will not have bright futures and since they want the best for them, thy sacrifice to have them go to school. As parents play their role by taking their kids to school, they also play their part in working hard with help from the teachers in order to achieve the goals that have been set. For a student or a pupil to succeed, it requires joint efforts from parents, teachers and the students themselves because all of them play major roles in making sure that the educational goals of the students are met. Recommendation For students and pupils to achieve their goals in their various educational institutions, there are various things that should be taken into consideration. There are certain things that should be implemented to make sure that all undertakings in schools are run effectively and that they end up being successful. First of all the students should make sure that they co-operate with their teachers for effective studies. Since they are the ones who are to be taught, they should be willing to give full co-operation to their teacher so that they can have an ample time to learn all units in time. The same case applies to the teachers. They should always attend class at the right time, make sure that they spend that time allocated effectively so that units that are set apart to be taught to completion in the allocated time. Parents on the other hand are expected to make their payment of fees at the right time t avoid inconveniences. They should make sure that all payments are made before the deadline so that all activities in the school can run smoothly. It is the school fee from parents that is used to buy facilities like books and other stationeries that are required for education purposes (Gardner, 1993, 82). This means that if parents do not lay their role there are some facilities that may not be provided in schools making educational programs ineffective to students and pupils. Teachers in schools should make sure that they have good communication skills so as to work together effectively. Good communication skills should exist between the managerial staffs in schools and among the teachers at large. Teachers should make sure that they are in good terms with each other and when new teachers come in they should make them feel welcomed so that they can get used to the environment faster and work along well. This will ensure that all the activities in the school are run effectively because the teachers are ready to co-operate with each other. The managerial staffs should also make certain that between them and the teachers exists a good working and communication relationship. This will help to make sure that the teachers communicate to the managing staff regarding all the happenings in the school. In this case, the managing body is able to have all facilities that are not available brought in on time because teachers always communicate to tell them how the progress is. This will help to make sure that the students and pupils get all they need to study effectively and achieve their goals. Teachers should have virtues that will enable them handle all students and pupils in the same way for effective teaching. They should be committed: they are expected to fully commit themselves to their work ensuring that they attend classes at the right time and attend to all students equally checking that all of them are comfortable with what is being taught. Patient: they should be patient with all students in that they should be ready to answer questions that are asked by students in class without seeing that it is a waste of time. Creative: they are supposed to teach extensively such that, all the information they offer is not only found in text books used in schools but also from other sources. This is to ensure that they provide broad data for students to have effective knowledge which will help them have an ample time in future. Hard working: they should work hard to make certain that their students are the best among all the other students. If every teacher implements this strategy, every student will perform quite well making learning institutions in the United Kingdom have pleasing performance. With the implementation of these strategies, educational institutions across the globe are able to work perfectly well, raising individuals that can have better life in future.
