In particular, the relationship is determined by the way the organization handles issues pertaining health, safety and the environment. The observation herein shows that there has been tension between the societal welfare and the conduct of stakeholders. The information herein shows that the well being of an organization depends on the society and vice versa, and the binding factor is observation of professional code of ethics by both parties. With increasing desires of companies and business units to gain profits, there is a high rift between the company’s aim of making more profits and promoting social lives of the employees. As much as making profits does make sense, community life and the well being of the society is much more important. The modern businesses are expected to honor the environment, provide safety, and promote good health standards. Government and civil societies are great players, who are supposed to ensure that there is a good legal framework that will observe the balance between the business economy and professional ethics. ...
Enterprises around the globe are developing business ethics programs to enable them solve these issues. Business ethics can therefore be described as a behavior that all enterprises should adhere to; it involves moral guidelines (Patil, 2012). Honoring business ethics is very essential in any business unit, as it tends to balance between the business economy and well being of the society without compromising one side. The various issues related to business and ethics include: Health issues that are most common in an industrial setup, for example, there could be products that have side effects to consumers and those packaging them. Other controversial issues are the standard of cleanliness, use of protective devices and use of animals for testing purposes. Labour related issues, for example overworking of employees, discrimination, tribalism, poor working conditions, underpayment, employee harassment and use of underage laborers. Bribes and corruption in order to win tenders and bids from government and organization. Compromise on product quality and quantity, unfair competition to related companies, compromise of raw materials and safety; these are referred to as business malpractices. Vermont Yankee Nuclear Plant According to a report by The New York Times, in the year 2007, a cooling tower at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vernon partly collapsed (Zeller, 2011). The plant was using a wired brush for cleaning of steel pipes that were circulating water to emergency equipment. While this duty was being performed, a dangerous event occurred.
