Abstract It is seen that the use of steel fibers as reinforcements in concrete lends superior properties to the concrete structure. The mechanical properties such as the load-bearing capacity and flexural strengths are enhanced. Steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) is more durable and exhibits creep resistance, higher durability, and has high resistance to crack propagation…

Introduction

Two-point load test was used to examine the bending moment of the bars while the cubes were subjected to compression tests for estimating their compressive strength. The flexural strength was also quantified. The effects observed on the steel fiber and steel bar reinforced beams and cubes were compared with those of beams and cubes made with plain concrete. The observations and comparisons are discussed. Introduction High durability and strength are an important prerequisite for concrete structures as they are continuously exposed to various forces, both static and dynamic (Elavenil & Knight 2007). Therefore, considerable research in recent years has focused on enhancing these properties in concrete. The use of fibers for reinforcement in concrete has been shown to improve its behavior. Reinforcement with fibers improves the toughness of concrete under any kind of loading as the fibers increase the strain experienced at peak load and enhance energy absorption (Van Chanh 2005). While several fibers such as glass, steel, cellulous and synthetic fibers are used for concrete reinforcement, the effects of reinforcement using steel fibers is explicitly discussed here. Special emphasis is given to the mechanical properties and performance of SFRC as compared to plain concrete. ...

project needs (Russell, 1999). In severe environmental conditions, durability is not considered a mandatory requirement for HPC. The Strategic highway Research Program (SHRP) while defining HPC for highway structures as requiring a maximum water-cement ratio, a minimum durability factor of freezing and thawing, and a minimum early-age or ultimate compressive strength, identified four types of HPC.…
Strengthening of concrete using fiber reinforced polymers (FRP)
Further, the energy dissipation capacity increases in multiples of 10of the retrofitted column-beam joints under increased displacements, till failure at 0.4g for unconfined frame and at 0.5g for confined frame. Accelerations of the shake table at 0.2g and 0.4g are observed and it is found that the acceleration of the shake table is higher under 0.4g by at least a factor of 10. Comparing…
the use of fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) in strengthening beams in the u.k
The fibres are usually glass, carbon or Aramid. Fibre reinforcement enhances strength and stiffness. FRP can be categorized in a class of materials known as composite materials, which are made up of two or more materials. When these materials are put together, they retain both their chemical and physical characteristics. FRP differ from other construction materials such as steel or aluminum that…
The use of fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) in strengthening beams in the UK
The material composites reinforced with carbon fibers have a higher tensile strength when compared to other materials. CFRP materials are thus very effective in areas exhibiting strong tensile forces. Although the tensile strength of steel is higher than that of FRP materials, steel is much stiffer and inappropriate to use in areas requiring some mobility. CFRP materials are less fragile and are…
Design a multi-story reinforced concrete office building
The building is to consist of a 30 people meeting suite/conference, a restaurant, different sizes common room on the 3 floors of the building. Ground floor will consist of, conference room, restaurant, common room and all services associated. The remaining unused floor is aimed for facilities of leisure. 3.0 General Approach The general approach taken is to obtain the architecture of an office…
Fabrication of a Reinforced Concrete Beam
Thirdly this gives sufficient space for the main reinforcement to develop full stressing and strength, which consequently prevents slipping of the bars. Lastly a sufficient cover gives a smooth surface which improves the aesthetics of the component as well. 3. 4. Bar codes are on the schedule so that the reader must understand that how the steel bar is is to be bended and what angles and shapes…
