Student names Professor Subject Date Remediation Remediation is the process of restoring a system’s initial capability by correcting its faults, shortcomings and deficiencies. Dam remediation mainly concerned with the removal of the pollutants and sediment accumulated over the years for the purpose of protecting the environment, human health and safety and to restore the Dam’s purpose…

Introduction

Remediation of Gorge Dam will involve; revitalizing its catchment area, that is the river Cuyahoga to ensure constant supply of water to the dam and reduce the flow of sediment. The decision to remediate a dam is based on various ecological, economical and human considerations in terms of impacts and risks associated with it. According to the American White Water organization, the Gorge Dam is roughly 57feet tall (approximately 17.4 meters), with a current average flow rate estimated at approximately 522 cubic feet per second (approximately 14.8 cubic meters per second). Remediation processes in the United States are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency and it is executed in stages. The Gorge dam was built in 1912 on the Cuyahoga River between Cuyahoga Falls and Akron Ohio. Vast deposits of metal waste from industries were dumped into the Cuyahoga River between 1912 and 1926, which over time have converted into free flowing sediment. Also from 1926 to 1978, coal combusted products were also laid in the river as waste. The dam was built for the generation of hydroelectric power for the local street car public transportation systems and to provide cooling water storage for a local coal burning power plant. ...

A Feasibility Study of Building Structural Deformation Monitoring using Global Positioning (GPS)
To achieve their objectives through this study, the authors monitored structural deformations in one high-rise building, viz. the Twin Tower of Science and Technology Complex, and one low-rise building, viz. the Innovation Centre Building, both of which belonged to the University Technology MARA (UiTM), in Selangor, Malaysia. The authors chose high accuracy GPS (±1 mm) and total station (± 1 mm,…
Engineering Disasters
In essence it is now generally accepted that the Banqiao Reservoir Dam failure was due to both man-made error/engineering failure and a natural disaster. This study investigates the main causes of the Banqaio Reservoir Dam failure and the implications when one or more dams depend on the sustainability of other dams. To this end, this paper sets out a description of the engineering disaster and…
Selected Engineering Field Research Paper
This is achieved by providing solutions for both consumer and commercial applications. Civil engineering is one of the oldest fields in engineering that arose out of the many challenges that humanity experienced in the early days. Civil engineers are concerned with overseeing the construction of tunnels, roads, bridges, airports and many other infrastructures. In the course of their job, civil…
Technical choice of dam materials and their environmental impacts
The suggested proposal has a rational of examining the potential benefits of using the drilling fluid in the recovery of oil in the homogenous reservoirs. Recognition of the application of drilling fluid in oil exploration may be beneficial to countries to help reduce on the cost of exploration. The researcher would conduct a primary analysis of data. In this respect a two-inch diameter by…

ged upon. Due to this, the project which will be proposed blurs the lines between economic development, and environmental recovery. Background: Although it has been over 25 years since the explosion that led to the release of radioactive matter at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in the Soviet Union (currently Ukraine), the fact of the matter is that the area in and around the release is still highly…

Some of the causes of embankment include embankment deformations under static loading, which occur due to volumetric changes, tangential and shear displacements within the embankment and groundwork materials. This study establishes that the volumetric changes are due to either a raise in the normal stresses on a soil constituent, which causes a decrease in void volume, or dilation of soil…
aswan high dam
The choice of this site for the dam was determined by the amount of water that was necessary to impound to make Egypt independent of the annual flood. The old dam had carried the yearly control of the Nile to its limit without altering the country’s dependence on flood and the only way to advance past its position, to ensure independence of the river’s vagaries, was to impound enough water for…
