Designing a sustainable factory is important due to the significant consumption of raw materials, resources, and energy involved in industrial manufacturing as well as the significant emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases (Holcim, 2008)…

Introduction

While the initial construction of factories was solely based on their functionality as a mechanism for the mass production of goods, giving little consideration to the environmental or social ramifications of its existence, the architects of the MAS Intimates facility sought to counteract this trend by creating a structure that would allow every occupant to enjoy the fresh air, natural light, comfortable surroundings, and beautiful outdoor views of intact natural settings within their work environment (Holcim, 2008). Such considerations have allowed MAS Intimates to surpass the traditional model of the factory to create an extraordinary facility that is not a detriment to the environment, but an asset to the ecosystem in which it occupies (Holcim, 2008). From the humble beginnings of a small factory sweatshop in Ratmalana with 26 sewing machines and 60 employees purchased by three brothers in 1986 (Business Superbrands) and revitalized by MAS Holdings in 2006, MAS has grown into a workplace in unison with nature that has significantly diminished its carbon footprint through carbon-neutral power sources and uses 25-40% less energy than companies of the same magnitude (Holcim, 2008; MAS Intimates Thurulie, 2009). ...

Personal health and safety at the construction site
A high level of risk is inherent in the construction work. The heavy equipment, channels of electric supplies, and mechanical operations all make construction work very risky from the point of view of safety. Almost a third of all fatalities in the construction projects happen during the execution of a project (hes.gov.uk, n.d.). If the CDM coordination is not done appropriately, the finished…
Site Management and Safety
Construction workers often fall from height and lose their life, this is also the leading safety hazard, it is the duty of the architect, client, engineer, site manager and quantity surveyor to ensure that there is proper harness in place, it should be checked properly so that such fatalities can be avoided. Motor vehicle crash is another very dangerous construction site hazard, this can be…
BCA Compliance for a Typical Location Requirements
Under the category of functional statement, the load bearing capacity of the structure and any other factor that may expose the structure into extra pressures are taken into consideration during the design and construction processes. The sustainability, quality and durability of the structure need to be considered. The structure should be in a position to meet the required standards in relation to…
Measured Building Survey
It comments on the current state of all parts of the structure. These parts of the building are physically inspected but limited to the scope of services offered by the building surveyor. Major defects survey is also referred to as main elements survey. For this type of survey, focus is on the main parts of the structure. Inspection and report concentrate on selected areas like roofs, floors,…
Site Management and Engineering
For further safety of the site, an additional gate is placed just in front of the construction area, this is for occasional use. For instance movement of formwork when it is no longer required, this will not disrupt the movement at the entrance and in movement corridors, further making the site safe. The plant area is kept just in front of the construction area, as it will avoid to and fro…
Site layout on a confined site
The problem comes in the implementation. It is less often technical difficulties that delay a project, the project manager must know his business, and hire crews that understand the mechanics of their individual specialties. The problem often arises in the organization. In many cases, it is managerial issues that trigger challenges at the construction site more than some sort of technical failure.…
