In contrast, the sectors dealing with the construction of the commercial and industrial buildings are the only ones who have recognized the importance of the Design and Build Procurement Method, aimed towards the betterment of their projects. Hence, the second hypothesis was accepted, that the use of the Design and Build Procurement Method is confined only to the industrial and commercial buildings sector. The Design and Build Procurement Methods ensured better project performance in terms of reduction in the length of time devoted to the completion of the project, better value for money and better quality, among others. Members of the Irish Construction Industry, whether or not they are dealing with big or small projects, may consider shifting towards the use of the Design and Build Procurement Method considering that the latter positively affects project performance. Table of Contents Chapter 1 Introduction Background of the Study Procurement is considered of paramount importance in each and every construction business. It generally refers to a number of issues, as it is concerned with gathering and organisation of different individuals, and companies (Hughes, Greenwood and Hillebrandt 2006). In a stricter sense, project procurement refers to that organisational process through which a building required by a client is obtained thus involving groups of people who are organised in a systematic manner, taking their duties, responsibilities and the formation of relationships amongst them into consideration (Masterman 2002). Nowadays, the members of the construction industry apply various types of procurement systems. Some continue to comply with the traditional system whereas there are others who have already employed fast-tracking systems such as the build-operate transfer, turnkey, management contracting, cost-plus contracting and design and build (Masterman 2002). The shift from the traditional types of procurement to these new types is pertinently brought about by the quest of the members of the construction industry towards a more efficient and speedier system of project delivery. The development of new types of procurement is connected with the betterment of the firm’s project performance overall (Molenaar and Yakowenko 2007). The shift towards new forms of procurement methods is considered an important innovation to the traditional procurement method in a sense that these are all aimed toward meeting the continuously changing demands of the clients of the construction industry (Hughes et al 2006; Greenhalgh 2011). In general, the study focuses on two procurement methods used by the members of the construction industry in Ireland. More specifically, the present study focuses on the traditional and design and build procurement methods. The background of the study presents important concepts related to the two in order to serve as the groundwork by which the latter parts of this study are founded. Statement of the Problem The researcher focuses on the differences between the Traditional and the Design and Build Procurement Methods to determine which significantly improves project performance. The paper elicits important themes from latest research to illustrate modular construction, sustainability, prefabrication and the impact of modular construction and prefabrication on the construction industry. Reports on sustainability of the construction industry illustrate further the impact of modular construction and prefabrication.
This excitement has been an impetus to the rapidity with which the underground construction/tunnelling industry has grown and also the extent to which it has attracted a lot of attention from key players within the construction industry (Beer 2009). Notably, emerging countries such as China, India, Russia, and Brazil which are experiencing high levels of economic growth have been the melting pot of major infrastructural improvements and developments, with underground construction being at the core of these developments.
Different business sectors had devastating impact of this recession. Recession drastically reduced the profitability, number of customers and the flow of funds within an economy. There were many job cuts, reduction in wages and salaries and the opportunities was reduced.
There are so many things that is needed to be considered with the self build project like the following: the quantity of work that is intended to do because this determines how much money is to spend in the project, the time frame which will determine how quickly the project must be done, will it be a self manage project in which one has to be very kin and sensitive with accuracy in time and other outside factor such as the season and weather.
A descriptive pilot study enquiring on the experiences of 20 self-builders chosen by purposive sampling offered a more profound understanding of self-building from first hand accounts of self-builders, themselves. Descriptive statistical measures were used in the analysis of the pilot study data, particularly frequency and percentage distributions and mean.
Modern methods of construction (MMC) involve dwellings or homes whose structure and parts are completely or partially created off site or sometimes on site by using modern and current methods. So MMC offers complete systems for housing that are constructed in a controlled factory environment through new and innovative technologies.
However, government employees garnered signicantly higher ratings.
