Managing of Energy Assets (Monitoring Transformer Performance)

There are two main categories of transformers, which include dry type and liquid filled transformers. In this paper, we will prepare a proposal for oil-filled transformers at substations, which are one of the main types of liquid filled transformers. Oil filled transformers make use of cellulose paper and mineral based oil in their insulation systems. This combination of cellulose paper and oil is very good for the working of transformers because they provide remarkable dielectric and thermal properties at a low cost. About this combination, Dickinson (2009) states, “So popular and effective are these units, that all other transformer designs are judged in relation to them”.
For outdoor usage, oil filled transformers are the best ones among all types of transformers because of their low purchase costs and thermal and dielectric properties.
The inclusion of mineral oil in the oil-filled transformers although makes them flammable but the low cost associated with these transformers makes them a good choice for power distribution companies. The low purchase cost of oil-filled transformers makes them an attractive choice for all types of power distribution companies. Dickinson (2009) asserts, “Oil-filled transformers, thanks to their lower purchase costs, find applications in literally every sort of power distribution”. ...

Renewable Energy
Renewable energy is good because it is non-polluting. In addition, of course as the name tells us it is renewable and does not use resources that can never be replaced. 2But there are other advantages to using renewable sources of energy. The benefits of renewable energy extend to stimulating the economy and creating job opportunities. The money that is invested in renewable energy is typically spent on materials and staff that build and maintain equipment instead of importing energy. The money spent on renewable energy stays in the United States for the most part, often within the same state...

It has also been found out that it requires 7 gallons of gasoline daily for each and every individual to maintain the country run at it normal pace. This figures alone reflect how the country rely on fossil fuel, it is true 90% of energy used in the country comes from fossil fuel; this is a very high percentage as compared to the rest of the world. Apart from the environmental effects associated with exploration and extraction of fossil fuels there are other forms of pollutions associated with fossil fuels. It notably they cause invisibility through smog, acid rain and at the same time leads...

Use of fossil fuel to generate electricity is the largest contributor of carbon emission (Shorrock & Dunster, 2008 p.134). In property industries across the United Kingdom, emissions of carbon are due to different household chores such as, lighting, cooling, heating homes during winter and use of machines especially those that could be powered by electricity. In industries, carbon could be emitted through activities such as mining, manufacturing and construction. For example, the chemical industries, food industries, paper and mineral production, petroleum refining and primary metal...

Alternative Energy
Proven Alternative Energy Sources Several kinds of renewable and clean sources of energy such as wind, solar, geothermal, hydro, biomass energy are now available. Each alternative source has its own characteristic importance depending upon geographical possibilities for its production. It will be most appropriate to delve deeper into each one of these sources. Wind Energy Wind energy is available mostly at the coastal regions where wind velocity is higher. Kinetic energy of the wind is tapped using wind turbines and converted into mechanical or electrical energy. Mechanical energy can be used...

Alternative Energy
The alternative energy source should enable humans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The energy sources should be capable of meeting the energy needs of the current society without compromising the needs of the future generations. Additionally, the sources should be cheaper than the existing sources to reduce the cost of production that industries have to undergo. This paper focuses on identifying potential alternative energy sources, which can be used to substitute fossil fuels in the future. Currently, there are quite a number of energy sources. However, humans have not maximized their...

Its biggest advantage is that it is virtually maintenance free and absolutely reliable, because of the absence of moving parts; it is designed for ease of assembly, use and maintenance. Its yet another significant benefit is that, it offers an option for nations to rid themselves of avoidable dependence on oil for fulfilling their gross energy needs. It is a nascent technology possessing the long term potential to create additional jobs for strengthening of economies. It does not generate hazardous waste or cause atmospheric pollution by release of gases like carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide,...

Condition monitoring - fault detection and diagnosis
The use of condition monitoring can be seen as a development from preventive maintenance, which itself developed from break down maintenance. Modern process requirements demand greater availability and reliability of machines which can only be provided through accurate monitoring of machine health. This allows maintenance personnel to determine the best possible course of action based on knowledge available from condition monitoring (Mahamad, 2010). Condition monitoring has found greater favour in maintenance circles based on savings and system simplification provided by it. Not only does...
