Introduction

moved during the day with sufficient lighting and a clear sky. This meant that a pilot could easily see other aircrafts when taking off, landing or when on flight on the sky. Traffic avoidance was based on ‘see and be seen’ principle. This implied that aircrafts could only be flown in conditions that would easily allow them to see other aircrafts and change their flight paths to avoid others. All pilots were expected to abide by this principle and were also not allowed to fly the aircrafts under cloudy conditions. Furthermore, pilots were only allowed to fly the aircrafts in areas where visibility was not less than 3 miles. Nolan (2010) notes that pilots and aviation operators were comfortable with these rules since the aircrafts of those days were slow and pilots could easily see and avoid other aircrafts on flight making the establishment of more organized system of aircraft control unnecessary. Nevertheless, as technology advanced and people began to move all over the world in 1930s, their came a need of a more advanced air traffic control system to allow aircrafts to be flown at anytime, day or night, irrespective of prevailing condition leading to the establishment of instruments that would allow pilots to navigate the aircraft without having to depend on visual inference to the natural horizon. ...

Fire Engineering
Incidents of fire in domestic and commercial buildings and rail and road tunnels have attracted criticism from the public as well as from other quarters and there have been constant changes in the building ordinance for fire safety to protect life and property. A framework for fire safety exists, based on which it is learnt that various countries including Hong Kong and Australia have developed a…
Reducing urban traffic congestion
Having been faced by various divergent perspectives on policies and approaches for dealing with traffic congestions, what kind of recommendation can policy makers be given in order to ensure there are the best possible policy outcomes of transport? Traffic congestions in urban areas takes on numerous faces, takes place in distinct contexts, and is as result of various processes. Due to these…
Materials in Engineering Systems - Uranium
Many regulatory agencies and activist groups work towards certain ends in the debate. Uranium seems set for a period of high significance as fossil fuels become scarce. The most viable replacement to Uranium is Thorium. The production of Uranium remains one of the most controversial issues in the energy industry. Uranium is naturally radioactive hence there are a range of issues that attend it…
Engineering Disasters
Investigations unearthed this with a number of recommendations being made to the FAA and the ATA. The disaster led to establishment of measures and guidelines to improve safety of aircrafts and passengers. The disaster had a great impact on material engineering with a resounding need to ensure proper composition and quality of products so as to ensure safety of the users. Table of Contents Table…
Engineering vs. Engineering Technology
Engineering technology can be described as being practice-oriented, stressing applications of engineering practice, laboratory experience competencies and engineering design. Looking at these two descriptions, one can note that a potential student will be confused by the overlap in these definitions. Therefore, students end up enrolling in one engineering program only to realize that they wanted…
Construction Engineering
Following are the steps involved in designing new hospitals in Canada(Martin). First and foremost step is designing the patient care areas which may either be for a single patient or for multiple patients. These areas are designed for proper HVAC conditions so that least energy is consumed to maintain required environmental parameters. These areas are usually provided with a window or wall that is…
Green Engineering
The Durst Organization developed and constructed the Four Times Square in New York between 19996 and 1999 (“Wired New York Meetup Group” 1). There are 48 stories in the building, which makes it the newest, and the greenest skyscraper in Manhattan (“U.S. Department of Energy” 1). The building was the first green skyscraper in U.S, which continues to track its energy performance with Energy…
