5). The injuries usually result from electrocution, cutting, fracturing of body parts, crushing, and serious burns among others. Unfortunately, these accidents usually occur because the workers involved in the maintenance of machines or equipment fails to take the right precautionary measures to control the machines or equipment by ensuring proper lockout/tagout. From the analysis, it becomes clear that lack of training is largely to blame for such avoidable and costly accidents. In order to prevent such accidental release of hazardous energy during maintenance of machines or equipment, it is highly appropriate that the workers involved in the maintenance or servicing of machines, such as craftsmen, laborers, electricians and machine operators are provided with proper training on how to ensure proper lockout/tagout of machines as required under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147(a) (3) (i) standard (U.S. Department of Labor par. 14). Additionally, OSHA requires that workers involved in maintenance or servicing of machines or equipment be trained on how to disable equipment or machines to prevent accidental start-up or release of energy stored to prevent the employees from suffering injuries (U.S. Department of Labor1 par. 4). The main aim of this training program is to teach all the workers involved in the maintenance or servicing of machines and equipments what is meant by lockout/tagout, the dangers associated with poor lockout/tagout and what to do to ensure proper lockout/tagout to ensure safe working environment.

The safety problem is that there is a serious danger when the workers involved in the maintenance or servicing of equipment and machines do not understand the right procedure that they ought to follow in ensuring proper lockout of machines or tagout of devices to devices that isolate energy.
