This dissertation aims to address the impact of political and cultural differences in project management of cross national projects. Apart from identifying the political and cultural differences that affect project management, case studies of six infrastructure construction projects in two countries have been conducted. The research suggests that differences in professional cultures, politics and institutions affect the successful management of the projects. The results on how cultural disparities affect cross national projects can help project managers in the identification of potential areas of possible conflict in cross national projects apart from suggesting areas of future research.

Nations are linked through cross-border infrastructures that shape regional integration processes. There are several instances of cross-border or cross national infrastructures dating back to several centuries. The Silk Route is arguable the most well known instance of ancient cross-border infrastructure. However, data on its construction is not available. There are also other critical transit and trade routes which predate it. To some extent, the world market during the pre-modern times was composed of a series of interlinked markets supported by infrastructure.

Whether these infrastructures were jointly carried out by the various autonomous regions is subject to another study but it would present an interesting case in ancient project management techniques. Just like in the past, societies’ welfare has come to depend upon numerous infrastructures. It is difficult to conceive a societal or economic activity that does not rely on infrastructure-related services such as transportation, electricity, and information and communication services. A protracted record of effective operation of such services has resulted in many societies taking them for granted.

While systems of infrastructures have demonstrated their considerable trustworthiness, there are records of past failures. There are also serious indications that future projects will likely fail.
