Characteristics of a Successful s 25th November, Introduction In a set-up, are drawn from different backgrounds, which means that they have different perspective towards education and this subsequently shapes their attitudes towards education and even how undertake their private studies as well as behave in the classroom. For example, Robinson (1993) noted that students whose parents are professionals or career people will drawn an inspiration from their parents and tend to perceive education from positive perspective and envision it as the gateway to great success that he or she has witness from the parents.

Alternatively, students whose parents hold blue-collar jobs or they do odd jobs will have a different perspective on education and they are not likely to view education with a positive perspective. However, Slack (2012) refuted such assumptions based on credible evidence that show not all children whose parents are professional positively embrace education and there are very hardworking and bright students whose parents do odd jobs. Besides the external factors, there are also internal factors amongst students, which make them to be either good or bad.

This present essay seeks to discuss three characteristics (internal factors) of a student who is good whilst providing a discussion about the characteristic. However, it is important to note that a good student is not necessarily a bright student but the characteristic, which will be listed demonstrate a hardworking student. Successful students are respectful In the writings by Hope (1994, p 45), she described respect as “due regard for the feelings, wishes, or rights of others.” Successful students are respectful towards their teachers as well as their colleagues, which mean that they adhere to the commands or wishes of their teachers and respect the rights of their colleagues.

Walker (2008) added that the core of academic excellence is adhering to the guidelines that have been issued by the teacher, which are meant to lead a student towards excellence or good performance. Because of the fact that teachers have been trained on guiding students towards achieving great excellence it therefore, mean that a student who respects the advice, suggestions, or request by the teacher will ultimately become successful. For example, a respectful student will always report to class on time as requested by the teacher, secondly, the student would always do the work that the teacher has posted, and thirdly, the student will always pay attention whilst in the classroom, which will enable him or her to grasp all that is being taught.

Successful students handle assignments and task given by the teacher with the uttermost seriousness that it deserve Successful students will never joke around with assignments or tasks that have being issued by the teacher and they exercise a lot of caution whilst handling these tasks. For example, when given class assignments, successful students will always ensure that the answers that they give are well researched and even the presentation of the work is done is a manner that will appease the teacher.

Secondly, while performing group tasks they will ensure they undertake their role in a diligent manner as expected by the teacher and they would avoid missing deadlines that have been issued by the teacher for submission. Successful students demonstrate an extra level of curiousness and even interest on their studies According to Sutton (2012), a successful student is one who is self-driven and will always find it within himself or herself to understand further, what the teacher has taught in the classroom, the areas that the teacher has not covered and even what the teacher might cover in the next lesson.

For example, if a teacher is undertaking a lesson on the history of America, a successful student will take it upon himself to ask his parents back at home about their views on American history, watch a few movies that touch on American history, and even read other books on American history other than the assigned reading. Conclusion In the introduction of the essay, it was noted that there are external factors that influence a students towards becoming a successful student but the three characteristics discussed above are internal factors that students have to personally demonstrate.

The key most important characteristic is respect towards teachers and colleagues, which stands as a pillar or solid foundation for all the other characteristics. In conclusion, it is noted from the characteristics that they are not a sure guarantee to the students that they will become the brightest in the classroom but it is a sure guarantee that they not have a conflict with the teachers, which is a starting point for academic excellence.
