English - Compare and Contrast

Discussion The major theme in the two stories of ‘the night’s traveler and solitude is love and sex. The two stories give highly illustrative experiences of the love and sexual relationships between the characters in the books, using highly expressive language to show the reader the extent and amount of love that is shared between the characters. The love affair between Meme and Mauricio in solitude provides the sweetest episode in the entire book, with the author illustrating the love and passion shared by these two major characters. The author explains the love making scenes between the two as they throw all caution and care to the air. Calvino, in his story, creates and develops the theme of love, laying emphasis on both the boy-girl love and family love between the characters. The two major characters in the book, Flannery and Ludmilla both seek each other’s love. Both books have episodes that show the characters experiencing the most intimate of love experiences of passionate love making. The love making sessions in the two books however, are characterized by conflict that the characters have to fight in order to attain full enjoyment of the passion and love between them. In the night’s traveler, the author depicts romantic love between the characters and illustrates it in writing, ‘grasping my back, she pulled me down with her on the mat and with rapid twitches of her whole person she slipped her moist prehensile sex under mine, which without a false move was swallowed as if by a sucker, while her thin naked legs clutched my hips’ (Calvino, p. 201)."I have no idea how long Mr. Okeda had been there. He was staring hard, not at his wife and me but at his daughter watching us. In his cold pupil, in the firm twist of his lips, was reflected Madame Miyagi's orgasm reflected in her daughter's gaze’ (Calvino, p. 208). This above illustrated text is highly graphic of the sexual theme in the book and clearly makes the point that the book was not intended for children but for adults. The author in solitude uses a lesser graphic language and illustration than Calvino’s as he talks of the love affair between Meme and Mauricio, but illustrates the love between these two characters through reported language. The story ‘if on a winter’s night traveler is one story that is highly devilish and intricate in the manner that the author fuses a number of themes within the story in order to tell one story. The author uses a high level of metafictional structure that serves to questions the belief of the reader in the notion and aspect of reality and how reality can be likened to the happenings in the contemporary works. To achieve this end, the author writes in a way that he questions the originality and intertextuality of the human existence. He uses aspects of uncertainty, confusion for the characters, and complexity of the human race among other aspects. In the story, one hundred years of solitude, the author exhibits a strong command of language as he illustrates the love between the major characters (Marquez, p. 102). Unlike the fictitious style of language used in the night’s traveler, solitude uses a more direct and straightforward language with which the reader is able to identify with and ... Read More
