Portfolio 9 December Dear Reader, It has been interesting and very informative going through the Expo I have been able to learn so much through the research that I did and the articles I wrote is a testimony. I submitted the articles to my professor and the comments I got were encouraging. I have derived many benefits from the entire process including gaining insight on the topics on selling of human organs and the American history. However, there are areas that I believe provide an opportunity for improvement since I have found further insight on how to improve. The topic on the selling of human organs is of importance due to its emerging and contentious nature. Several questions have arisen from the point of view that organs are being sold, raising both heath and ethical concerns. The American history is also of major concern considering the need for our generation to understand where our country has come from and get to understand the differences and similarities between then and now. The three essays I wrote revolves around these two major topics, here I will explain in detail my findings and the positive and negative remarks that I have established as I review them. Following an article on the ‘Capitalism Magazine’ by Holcberg about the issue of human organs being predestined for sale, I developed a deep interest to review the topic so as to present Holcberg’s thoughts systematically. I found the report raising very serious concerns about legalizing of selling of human organs. I clearly articulated his concerns while presenting the facts that he had considered. My introduction was very captivating and captured the concerns at a first glance. The reasoning behind the article was not based on my own thoughts but that of the author. The topic limited me to the thoughts of the author; an aspect that I believe brought some biasness in the article and made the topic narrow instead of taking the broader perspective of capturing the opinions of many. However, the brevity and the systematic articulation of my points made the essay to read and comprehend. Several improvements to the article could have made it more interesting and more informative. I only focused on an individual have thought that was a challenge; this could have been enhanced by considering not only the opinion of others but also could have reviewed some literature on the topic. Another challenge was in the way I presented my work, all the points I presented them in one long paragraph. This could have been improved by articulating my points in individual short and precise paragraphs. It is apparent that the paper limited use of my own thoughts an aspect that made me as the writer to be a reviewer and had no opportunity to put across a personal opinion, especially because the topic had been of concern to me. Grammatical errors and poor sentence structure also prevailed in my work; an aspect contributed by the fact that I did not take time to edit my work, I learnt a lesson and has decided that next time I will be keen to recheck. My second essay was geared towards giving a summary of the Krugman’s article that was published in the New York Times focusing on the similarities and differences between the America we had at independence and today. I presented the reasons for his argument as presented in the media. The thoughts were analyzed taking into concern the key points that outstand when comparing the state of the country at the two different times. All the information was presented in one paragraph since they were direct and self-explanatory. However, the narrow presentation was evidenced by the regard of Krugman’s thoughts only, without having a point of view from other individuals. My opinion of the situation influenced the summary, such that I was prompted to think against the arguments of the author. However, to restrain myself from his facts and opinions I had to break down the arguments into points that he had mentioned. This facilitated the development of a summary in a great way. The main purpose of this work was to give a brief summary of Krugman’s position. The paper that I wrote successfully provided his position by presenting his three assertions in a coherent and simplified way. All this appeared on a single paragraph. I quoted the work of the original author two times, an aspect that provided the exact thoughts by Krugman. I believe this paper can serve as a good analysis and a summary to a person who has no time to go through the entire work hence saving on their time while at the same time getting the exact information intended for the reader. I have specifically desired to learn about the topic because it helps me connect history with the current issues. Some improvements to the topic include the involvement of additional sources to complement the opinions presented by Krugman. I wish I had the platform to have diversified opinions to enrich my essay as I did the summary. I also found that the essay did not encourage extensive reading; hence, it turned out to be very simple and straightforward. If there were an opportunity to compare from various sources, it would have brought a broader picture. The third piece of work that I wrote presented diversity of thoughts on the ‘Analysis of Sale of Human Organs Arguments’. This topic has been of particular interest to me given the magnitude of the concerns that are being raised. In fact, I find it helpful since a few months ago I found myself on a heated debate with a colleague on the controversial topic of sale of human organs. I found very informative analysis from a variety of sources that helped to shape my opinion on the topic. I believe my presentation provided a point of view that can be relied upon given the nature of comparison that I gave from different authors. I also highlighted the concerns that have been raised concerning sale of organs. My main achievements in articulating the topic include the good command of language, the grammatical correctness of my words and phrases and above all the clarity in the presentation of the ideas in paragraphs. Another point of strength was in the in-depth analysis and summary of the points presented by the quoted authors without veering off towards my own imaginations. However, I believe more through research could enhance the article to make it have a broader picture of the issue without focusing on a few concerns. Two weaknesses emerged from my work. Firstly, the summary I presented failed to capture most of the minor points by the authors. Secondly, I mentioned that there are authors who had said particular things without pointing out clearly the names of the exact authors and the platform they used. Each of the three pieces of work was very important to me. They helped me develop summarizing and research skills among others. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to learn that it was not in vain that I engaged in the three projects. They have made me to grow not only in my grades but also have been very informative while arousing personal interest in the topics. Read More
