However, parents should know that this book features rough material that includes child abuse, rape cases, and men who do not treat their wives with respect. Nevertheless, it also focuses on a smart teller who is gifted and determined to forget all about his poor neighbourhood and move on with her life as she desires (Cisneros 56). Even though this is a part that serves as an encouragement to the reader, its content must be used very carefully especially when used in a classroom environment. In addition to the above, this book may not be able to give readers a humble time to clearly relate Esperanza’s conditions which includes a single room for the entire family, men who hunt out for small girls, as well as fathers and husbands who ill-treat their children.

However, they may understand the character’s quest for better living conditions, and the significance of her promise to return to the ones she quitted. While reading the book for the first time I realized so many punctuation and grammatical issues that may not be very recommendable for starters. It is not logical to argue that since the story was told by a child, then the excuse of poor English can be tolerated. This is a poor style of writing because when the bad grammar combines with the stories told in bits may end up confusing the reader on how best he or she can understand the book.

One may not be in a good position to determine who had spoken and to determine the exact words uttered by a particular character, thus makes the reading less enjoyable (Cisneros 12). The insufficiency of personalities in the minor actors is also a dislike in the book. The author centred so much focus on Esperanza’s emotions and thoughts and forgot about the other characters. The dominant use of drama in the book also is depressing because there are too much tragic events to get a positive feeling of the story to bring a fairly happy moment.

In fact one cannot link suitably the disjointed emotions of different chapters and if not keen, one cannot see some sense in it. I think the book cannot lack something positive. The portrayal of the way people moved with their families and the analysis of the way people live under different life conditions is really inspirational and motivating for a reader who wants to know what life really means. Further, it is interesting to learn about how the community mentioned in the book lived in unison, knowing each other and afraid of racism (Cisneros 30).

They could not imagine getting themselves in a new environment other than their own. It is through such thoughts that we get to understand why Esperanza is fed up with the life of the neighbourhood and the joy she will feel when she gets out of Mango Street. It is even more interesting when she thinks she could one day escape but the escape could be of no use because she would still come back to the people she loved most, who themselves can never make a mistake of going away from here. In conclusion, the book, “The House on Mango Street” is a moderately good book, only if a reader opens and engages his mind on the wider perspective of life.
