How Tangled Is a Good Comedy - Movie Review Example

Evaluative essay Thesis I argue that Tangled is a good movie. It covers a lot of genres which are Animation, Comedy, Fantasy, Musical and Family. It contains a number of memorable tracks and has also received a National Movie Awards in the category of animation. Tangled in 3D is a remake of its original 2D movie which was named Rapunzel. A Queen gave birth to a baby girl named Rapunzel. She was born with a unique gift of beautiful, golden, magical hair which has the power of healing the sick. Gothil kidnapped Rapunzel in greed and used her hair as a source to keep herself young throughout her life but like every successful movie, a hero comes in Rapunzel’s life and saves her from Gothil. This movie is based on Animation, Musical, Family, Fantasy and Comedy. Screenwriter Dan Fogelman (who wrote Cars and Bolt) very intelligently presented the script by brilliantly embedding the emotions in the dialogues , which cracks you up at one time and tears you up at other.. The main cast includes Mandy Moore, a pop singer, and an actress who suited perfectly for the role and brought all the emotions and excitement to the play. TV star Zachary Levi (Chuck), her counterpart, played the role of Flynn Rider a charming and an arrogant person who experienced thief and has mastered in the skill of stealing right in front of people’s eyes. Donna Murphy (Tony Award winner) played the role of Mother Gothil, who is an evil, self-involved woman pretends to be Rapunzel’s mother. This movie is based on the following genres, Animation, Comedy, Family, Fantasy and Musical. The criteria on which a comedy film can be judged are, how great the situation is, the way of speaking, and are the characters’ actions exaggerated? How much focus has be made on building up the personality of each and every character? I believe Tangled fulfills these criteria. It has a whole lot of matured comedy as well as slapstick comedy perfect for kids and adults. Two of the supporting characters in the film, Pascal ad Maximus, play a great part in enhancing the comedy. There are many scenes in the movie where you crack up. One of those is when Flynn rider pretends to be a smolder while taking to Rapunzel. The criteria on which a fantasy movie can be judged are that it should have an element of magic, myth, wonder, escapism should be present. Character should be placed in a fairy tale where unreal events have to occur. Common elements which can be found are, flying carpets, magic swords and spells, dragons etc. When it comes to magic, this element can be purely seen in Rapunzel’s hair, as it aided her real mother, the Queen in the movie. Not only that, Mother Gothil also used her hair to keep her young. Later in the movie, her magical hair also helps her in rescuing. Besides this the 70 feet castle in which Rapunzel and mother Gothil are staying is also unreal in nature. The criteria on which a musical movie is based are it is used to take the plot to a different level and to develop the characters in the film. It should include basic entertainment chorographic steps, if not proper steps, the character’s expressions could play the role. Tangled has all these character of a musical film. It has a total of 20 sound tracks throughout the movie which make it entertaining and also advances the plot of the movie at certain points. My later discussion would prove how Tangled is an excellent example of its genres. How Tangled is a good comedy movie. A comedy movie is judged on certain basic criteria which tell us whether it is good comedy movie or a bad one. A comedy movie is successful, if the situations, the tone of the person and their actions are exaggerated or a certain part of the character’s personality makes us burst out laughing. A good attempt has been made to make us laugh many scenes. In the scene, a person in my closet, where she tried her best to lock rider in her closet through hilarious acts is an excellent example of her bravery which is reflected through comedy. The way she uses her fry pan for defense is even funny. Tangled doesn’t let us down in any of these criteria but has all these elements present. In the movie review by ChriZdina, she wrote that, The story of Tangled also allows for Disney’s signature non talking characters as well. Two characters which are present in the film are Rapunzel’s chameleon companion, Pascal, and the kingdom horse turn companion to Flynn rider, Maximum (ChriZdina) Another critic, Robinson stated, The script and the sprightly directing give the story plenty of snap and humor (Robinson) In the scene pandering, the communication between Rapunzel and rider is extremely entertaining and full of humor. In the scene, Reluctant Alliance, the slapstick comedy of Maximum made us laugh. His facial expressions are extraordinary. Throughout the movie, a couple of times chameleon puts his tongue in rider’s ear, and the way rider reacts is vey funny. The scene when rider flies on top of maximum’s back is funny. The way they fought for the satchel and the way they both fell on the ground after their fight was hilarious. These examples and the critics review are a clear example of the superb comedy in the movie. How Tangled is a good fantasy movie The criteria on which a fantasy movie can be judged are supernatural events, magic, fantasy world etc. Common elements can be the appearance of dragons, flying carpets or magical spells. On the website, rottentomatoes.com, Neal stated, Tangled is Disney recapturing its magic and that fairy-tale sense (Neal) Wilner also stated that It's a fleet, fun and splendidly realized digital fantasy designed to look like a Disneyland attraction come to life (Wilner) Rapunzel’s 70 feet long hair with magical healing power, the extremely long tower with no stairs, the appearance of thousands and thousands of lantern on Rapunzel’s birthday, the way maximum and Pascal supported Rapunzel and Rider in the movie are great examples of the intense fantasy created to attract people. The fact that the whole situation of Rapunzel, having never stepped out of the tower and mother Gothil using Rapunzel’s hair to enter and leave the tower also supports this fact. At the end of the story, the way Rapunzel’s hair turn’s brown after being cut and her tear drop saving Riders life are also some prominent examples. These facts and the critics review prove it to be a fantastic fantasy movie. How Tangled is a good musical movie The criteria on which a musical movie can be considered good are, the songs should take the story forward and also tell us about the character itself, Critic McKiernan stated on filmcritic.com that, The film is bursting at the seams with musical numbers, with a lyric-to-dialogue Ratio that might favor the former (McKiernan) There are a total of 20 sound tracks in the film. It is the first animated Disney movie since 1997 with music by Alan Menken who got the best original song category in the academy awards and also broke many records. The opener song of the movie, When Will My Life Begin, expresses the personality of Rapunzel and tells us that she is as busy as a bee and is having an amazing time in her tower, but also expresses her wish to step out of the tower. Kimmel (New England Movies Weekly) stated The music might have saved the film (Kimmel) When Rapunzel expresses her wish to see the lanterns, her wish is let down by her mother’s emotional blackmailing and evil convincing techniques by the song, Mother Knows Best. This song convinces Rapunzel that her mother is speaking the truth and hence the story takes a different turn as she changes her idea to go out of the tower. The ballad, I see the light, Oscar nominees for Best Original Song 2010, sung by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi is yet another great example. This song is sung on the happiest day of Rapunzel’s life, when she views the lanterns and her dream comes true. The chorus sung by the criminals called I've Got a Dream is yet another song full of energy and enthusiasm building up certain different characters personality like big nose, hook hand and pub thugs. The main characters in the movie which became the reason for laughter are chameleon and maximum. Their slapstick comedy took the movie to another level. Besides that, the whole scene when Rapunzel and Rider come across criminal gang is a reason to laugh. It also truly is a fantasy movie. Magical ability of Repunzel’s hair and tears, Rapunzel being stuck in the tower for 18 years, horse helping Rapunzel to reach her destiny etc, are certain unreal fantastic fantasy features in the film. Also when it comes to musical, 20 sound tracks, all of the songs building up the story and the character are great examples of its genre.
