The characteristics of Loma Linda University that are particularly attractive and meaningful to me and why I have chosen to apply for advanced education. It is necessary to stress that the Loma Linda University has several important characteristics that are appealing to me. They seem to be very attractive and meaningful and I am sure that they will contribute to the development of my personality greatly. The first significant characteristic is that LLU is religion oriented. It is a very good feature because the world nowadays is full of violence, abuse and lack of morality among people. Religion teaches to oppose all these things and live another life directed by Christ. I would like to study in the environment that respects religious values and inspires to be moral. I know that this educational institution tries to help people who need assistance and care. I have such experience already as I have participated in some volunteer program to assist homeless people. That is why I feel something in common with LLU and it is a good thing for me, like a sign that this university is a friendly home for those who are eager to join it. The above-mentioned things ensured me that LLU is the only educating institution I would like to study at. It attracts my attention by its attitude towards both the staff and the students. I like when people are respected and taken care of. Moreover, I will get an opportunity to make friends with the students from other cultures because this university allows students from various backgrounds to study together. This means that LLU gives an opportunity to learn more about different countries and people who live there. It is very important for me because I would like to know more about the world around me. Now I do not need to go to another country to get information, it is enough to enter Loma Linda University and communicate with its students. Moreover, I like the university’s attitude towards god and church. The staff of LLU believes that all people are created by god and should be friendly with each other. The university supports the global mission announced by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. I like this mission and I am eager to join it too. In fact, studying in LLU means that I shall get the education I need and become closer to god. Both these things are extremely important to me. That is why I think that there is no better university that may combine the above-mentioned purposes. I also like the diversity of programs suggested by LLU. They are: School of Science and Technology, School of Allied Health Professionals, School of Religion, School of Dentistry, School of Public Health, School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy. This diversity is very meaningful to me. How my spiritual experience has influenced and been integrated into my daily life? I have been volunteering on a monthly basis through a church organization to help the homeless. We provide the poor and homeless of Los Angeles and Orange County with nutritious meals, clothing, medications, and blankets before the winter session. We serve more than 150 meals each month to homeless, disabled, elderly and low-income adults and children. This program is a way of giving to the less fortunate, and it is quite inspirational. I have been involved in the program for the past three years. Moreover, I am an active member for the church program called “Helping new Comers”. The objective of the organization is assisting Egyptian immigrants to the United States. The program offers various methods of support. Job searching, school enrolments, and translation and acquirement of legal documents are all part of the support that the program offers. I also was a volunteer for Engineering without Borders Egypt. This is a non-profit organization designated to help the poor in Egypt. I am part of a seasonal team that goes to Egypt that visit the farmers who cannot afford to go to hospitals. The staff doctors will check the patients and provide them with basic medical needs at no cost. I served in this program from summer of 2011 to give back to the people of my country of origin. It was a pleasant experience, and I learned so much throughout the summer. Aside from treating the ill, there were several educational seminars about health issues presented to the people. My duties during this program was assisting the physicians during the examinations of patients, checking blood pressure of individuals, handing out medicine supplies, and keeping a log of medical supplied on hand. I also provided First Aid and changed the dressing of patients when required. I have done my clinical shadowing with Dr. Nazieh M.Haddad. This experience was at his clinic in Newport Beach. I was present during multiple cosmetic surgeries at Tustin and Santa Anna Medical Centre. I attended one surgery every week. Also, I spent 4 hours a week learning how physicians conduct health histories and how they interact with their patients. This amazing experience, in a medical environment, allowed me to make my informed decision to pursue my future career as a Physician’s Assistant. It also gave me the chance to have direct exposure to the medical practice, and to learn the responsibilities and roles of a Physician’s Assistant. The desirable qualities that I see in myself that I believe would aid the University in considering my application. I grew up in Egypt, a country full of goodness. However, I always felt that it was unjust for people to live in poverty, where diseases and malnutrition were most likely to appear. Lack of access to quality education and resources was preventing people from escaping the cycle of poverty. Although I felt like things should change, I was limited because I was just a young girl. I began my studies in university with tourism and history. Throughout my years of studying in Egypt, I became trilingual (English, Spanish, and Arabic). I wanted to be able to assist the tourists that came to my country by being able to communicate with them in a language they understood. I even volunteered with my school to become a tourist guide to help make their stay pleasant and safe. However, my life took a different direction, which caused my life to change drastically. My father had a stroke and become very ill in my last year of college. My dad lost his ability to speak and move due to his stroke and his MD recommended him to exercise and work with an occupational therapist to help him restoring his ability to speak and function. My caring and sympathetic demeanor made me feel like I had to do everything in my will to help him. Therefore I started to visit the numerous of occupational therapist in Egypt with my father, I would listen carefully and watch every single exercise and equipment she used to help my dad. Because it was too expensive for us to go to the OT every day, so I invented some simple ways to help him to exercise at home such as sand bags ,and I went through the alphabetic letters two hours a day . Seeing my dad improvement helped me to gain the determination to find a way to help people. I wanted to dedicate my career to assisting people in need, especially people who are disabled due to mental or physical conditions or developmental issues and improving their ability to live as independently as possible. I knew I could never reach this goal in Egypt, so I decided to immigrate to the United States of America. Moving to North America was not an easy step, for the culture and atmosphere were completely different than Egypt. However, I quickly settled in and it felt like home in a matter of months. I began my career path of assisting the needy and sick by working as a Pharmacy Technician. This job allowed me to get a feeling of satisfaction as I helped in supplying the medications needed by the sick. Moreover, I gained experience as I began to learn about more medications, their use, and their side effects. My work did not go unnoticed because many of the customers would compliment my enthusiasm and my benevolence. This gave me certainty that the medical sector was where I belong. I continued on my path into the medical sector by completing science academic prerequisites to become an occupational therapist. I am now ready to continue my more specialized studies to become an Occupational Therapist. I want to devote myself to diagnose patients in order to help them recover and live a healthier life. This is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I owe it to myself and to my father. During my spare time, I also look for ways to help the needy. I have been an active member in a program called Helping Newcomers. This program assists people who have recently immigrated to the United States. Everything from paperwork to furniture is what this program supplies. This volunteer experience allowed me to gain organizational skills and the capabilities to meet short deadlines, which is a key for any profession. Currently, I am shadowing Dr. Haddad at his Newport office for over a year. I am responsible of filing all the medicals forms. I learned how to interact with patients and to gather medical history and background information. I have observed a number of procedures. These procedures include rhinoplasties, face lifts, and breast augmentations .This volunteering experience allowed me to become closely familiar to the physician’s role in medicine. Moreover, I volunteered this past summer with Engineers Without Borders Egypt. This is a nonprofit organization that helps the needy in Egypt. I was able to give health education to the needy and assist the doctors that were on the site to treat the sick. I am very interested in being accepted at a top quality Physician Assistant school. I am both eager and ready to become a Physician Assistant student. I want to learn the techniques required to do my job to the best of my abilities. LLU believes deeply in integrating spiritual values into the educational experience. As a result, religion courses and chapel attendance are part of the curriculum. Why I believe such a faith-based education would be of special benefit to me? I think that spiritual values and educational experience should be connected with each other. Religion courses and chapel attendance are very important because they will contribute the development of my personality. I want to get to know more about humanity and attitude towards people that can be taught only by means of religion. I do not want to lose my morality and behave like everybody in our society lacking faith and Crist. That is why am sure that a faith-based education would be of special benefit to me.
