Life’s too Short to Miss an OpportunityLife has taught me a tough lesson early in my life – ‘Take what I can while I can because life’s too short to miss an opportunity’. I’m a 28 years old female and I’ve seen the best and certainly the worst of my life time. I grew up in Moscow, Russia where I learnt about the rights and the wrongs. My friends in school, teachers and my parents recognized my potential early on to visualize things in the least bit of detail and helped me hone this skill.

I travelled to many places in Russia where I got the opportunity to look at the country’s history, its magnificent architecture, its various cultures and the recent developments. After completing my high school in Russia, I came to US at the age of 15 in pursuit of higher education but due to differences in standards, I had to complete my High School in US as well. Pursuing a higher education career in Public Relations, I had to discontinue my education due to personal reasons and hence took an indefinite break from studies as a result.

My life changed all of a sudden when at the age of 25 I was diagnosed with cancer. Looking at the bleakest time in my life, I realized that I should have done what I wanted rather than a career that I could never complete. Recovering from cancer was like living in another life, a never ending journey resisting and fighting cancer all the way. Eventually as I started getting better, I realized that all is not lost yet. My hardest time in my life had made me stronger. My will and devotion to my thoughts were firm when I finally decided that I needed to continue my education.

This time I followed my heart and chose a field that I had an ‘eye’ for, not to mention my interest and passion. Interior Designing was something that excited me the most and so I took up an interior design program at the Art Institute of Colorado. Unfortunately I had to put this field on the hold once again, this time due to me and my spouse's relocation first to another state and then after a year’s time, to Canada. I tried not to waste my time and all this while I got the opportunity to explore the architecture and places in US and recently in Canada.

After getting cured completely, I volunteered for the Canadian Cancer Society and I’m still committed to help people recover from Cancer just like me. Now that I’m settled in my new home with no plans of shifting again, I would like to continue my education in interior design. The several years break hasn’t demotivated me, in fact it has given me an opportunity to think that the field I chose is exactly what I wanted. I am still determined and passionate about this particular field. Being an interior designer is not just about making a house or a place look beautiful, it is about extracting the beauty out of things which we already posses.

Just like how a room looks better when its setting is changed after a while, the way we see things changes when our mindset changes. I just don’t wont to change the setting of the area, I want to build it aesthetically and sound in the engineering and architectural sense. This is why I want to be an interior designer and not just an interior decorator as I want to change the physical sense of things that meets the eye. My initial public relation education has made me quite able to communicate with people and make them understand how and why an area would look aesthetically better when it is changed a bit.

Creating trust and making people believe in me, is a quality which I have acquired by building such a reputation. I chose this specific university because I take my education seriously and I feel that this university will provide me exactly that. Being a quick and determined learner, I will be an ideal student in your university. My teenage commitment with architecture will also get promoted once I’m able to pursue that field with a master’s degree in architecture. I eagerly look forward to join the university and change the lives of people for the better in the very near future.
