Perception Checking Introduction Perception Checking allows a person to estimate the received information on the basis of the existing knowledge and information which we possess. Therefore, it is one of the most important communication skills. It is this particular tool that we use in our everyday lives as we show for critical thinking, logical reasoning and objective estimation of various situations. The goal of this paper is to analyze the cases of perception checking using particular examples, and give all the necessary conclusions and recommendations for the proper implementation of the principle of perception checking.

Directions. The Role of Perception CheckingFor starters, we need to clarify that perception checking is a necessary skill that is required for the accurate analysis and objective estimation of a current situation. This is a method by which a person may be prevented from jumping to a conclusion based on a “perceived reality” with lack of information and observation backing it up. The role of this act is to prevent the effects of a wrong reaction or solution to the problem faced. Which is why as a communication tool, perception checking may be based upon the following principle:Looking In and Looking Out.

Originally, perception checking was not observed to be a universal tool, but it proved to be highly useful in avoiding communication conflicts and misconceptions without which we would be subjected to making the wrong conclusions all the time. However, there are times when the method is also improperly used. So as a rule of thumb, the following guidelines apply to the use of perception checking as a communication tool: first of all we demonstrate the respect for the experience and personality of every individual we communicate with, and build the relations based on honesty and mutual truth.

We discourage ourselves from mind reading, and thus, avoid essential mistakes, which originate from it. As the perception tool is so powerful that is can invoke a sense of high confidence in a person, it is important to reiterate to the person being listened to that the listener cares for his or her point of view and respects it.ContextPerception checking is a communication tool that encourages people to think over the existing circumstances of a situation and applying reason and logic to the currently seen outcome.

Take the following case as an imaginary example: If it becomes dark in a room, people do not think that a nuclear carrying missile has just destroyed the power plant. People usually think there is a blown fuse which has left the whole house without power. However, the most likely reason for darkness in the room is actually a worn out light bulb in the lamp and the most likely solution to the problem is to replace the bulb in the lamp. The same applies to communication. The context, which presupposes the use of the perception checking tool requires close relations with the person, towards which it is applied, and clear realization of the circumstances, which require the application of the tool.

Originally, this may be associated with numerous situations and backgrounds, Dialogue – case one The background of the dialogue, which will be represented, is associated with the communication of two persons: me, and my friend’s relative; Brandi . As I am an international student, from the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which many people have a lot of feeling and different points of view about it. One year ago, Spring 2010, I went with my friends, who are my roommates, to the bear lake. Since we arrived, Scott was staring at me and seemed, as he would not like me for some reasons.

I, apparently, looked like as not an American citizen by many ways. At the sunset period, we started to have a barbeque, every person start drinking alcohol continually. Unexpectedly, he started this disrespectful conversation:Scott: What made you come to the States? Don’t you have universities there? Or you guys are going to find another target to blow it off? What a Bin Laden face?!Me: I think that your eyes are just looking to your media? Have you looked at other country’s medias? Have you been there?

Do you know what is really happened here and there? Would you like me to tell you more about what is going on? What would you like to know? After my friends tried to take him out of the place to avoid any further misunderstanding between us, I realized that at the time, the circumstances did not allow me to give him the more accurate response to his actions. I instead went with a knee-jerk reaction that caused the situation to only become worse. I admitted that what happened made me feel so upset and branded by other peoples actions.

By not thinking about the actual reasons behind his actions and becoming highly defensive, I did not allow the flow of productive communication to flourish. In this instance, perception checking failed because I did not apply it properly to the situation. A situation that was rectified the next day as we sat down and communicated properly. The next day, around 9:00 am, he woke up and came me to ask about many unanswered points. I gamely answered his queries and we had a really wonderful conversation.

Without the intoxication and hot heads, perception tool as a method of communication worked wonderfully for us. Dialogue – case two The two characters on this situation were, me and my brother Mazen. When I arrived home, I figured out that Mazen had not fed my dog, Zorro. He was unable to do so because he had fallen asleep and did not really feel obligated to feed the dog since Zorro is my dog and my responsibility. Me: I noticed that Zorros bowl is empty. I feel so sorry for him. Maybe we should give him to a better home.

What do you think?Mazen: oh, No..!! I have gotten used to him and don’t want to loose him. I’m sorry. It won’t happen again. By applying the perception checking tool in both instances, I was able to come to simple and logical conclusions. In the first case, Scott needed some help understanding anothers point of view in order to remove the limitations that had been created for him by the U.S. media. That way he would stop being rude to those from the Middle East. Using the perception tool, both friends or relatives where given a chance to truly understand each other, avoid offending each other, and maintain their sound relationship in both instances.

This is the brightest example how the lack of perception checking could ruin a close friendship or relationship. AnalysisThe context and the dialogue presented in the paper show the fact that perception checking is a useful tool only when applied by open-minded people. Therefore, it requires the development of this particular communication style by the person. The fact is that, this tool becomes impossible to use if a person is unable to estimate the situation objectively and make a thorough analysis of the considerations and conclusions.

So, even if the person is aware of such communication skill, one will have to apply immense effort in order to study using it properly and timely. This ability is one that requires constant practice. The first step for developing this skill is understanding. The requirement to feel the needs and concerns of the other person is the most important part of friendly communication and may be observed as a feature of a psychologically adult person. Once the concerns are realized, there is strong necessity to rearrange the system of conclusions and considerations, that requires a thorough analysis and proper study of the situation, taking into consideration the additional circumstances.

The use of this skill influences the relations with other people positively. ConclusionFinally, it should be emphasized that the communication skills and proper application of the necessary tools generally depend on the matters of personal traits of every person. In spite of the fact that perception checking is a powerful and very useful tool of successful communication, one must note that it requires objective thinking and proper analysis of the surrounding circumstances. The analyzed dialogue also reveals the notion that this tool may be applied mainly in the communication of two close people, as it is difficult to analyze the behavior of an unknown person.
