The situation led to the point where he began following us in his SUV. We kept on the straight road; however, the man attempted to slow us down by maneuvering himself in front of us. He made numerous attempts to successfully pull this off; on his third attempt he blocked the street in front of us completely. As we arrived close to his SUV, the man got out of his car and it appearing as if he was taking a dark object that was attached to his hip. My instant reaction was to swerve and try and avoid any accident with his vehicle.

I was successful in avoiding any confrontation with the man. I felt an immense sense of relief. However, I looked in my rear mirror and noticed that he was again following our vehicle. Luckily for us, a police car was stationed on the corner of the intersection so the man drove off into the distance. This event of violence caused me to go through a number of emotions and such fear and excitement all at the same time. This whole course of events caused me to feel more scared than I have ever felt before.

When I saw the man reach for something from his hip, I could swear that he was about to pull out a gun. As my siblings were in the car too, I was afraid of what might have happened to them. I honestly thought that the man was going to kill them. It was a frightening thought to think of not being able to see or hug my siblings again. Besides my fear for my siblings, I also had to take my own life into consideration. I had always thought that I would one day end up married, but he was potentially going to take that opportunity away from me.

I felt scared at this thought because I would possibly not have an opportunity to live a long and fulfilling life. Throughout this event, my life flashed before my eyes more than once. When the man blocked the road in front of us and got out of his vehicle, I felt paralyzed because I was unsure about what would be his next move. My mind was completely focused on what appeared to be the gun at his side and also the possibility that I might not make it out of this situation alive. In the heat of the moment my mind went blank.

The only thing that I kept saying to myself was, “I am going to die.” I felt panicked because I did not want to get into a confrontation with him. I swerved around his car so that any harm could be avoided. I felt angry because of the sudden panic that was upon me. I also developed feelings of anger because he was threatening my life and I did not want to be in this situation at all. This event was a life changing experience for me in a number of different ways. I now feel grateful just to be alive and also to be able to be with my closest friends and family.

Now, every time that I am out late at night, I am more alert and aware of the situation around me. I try to avoid aggressive drivers wherever I can and, if I happen to come across one, I am more prepared on how to act if the situation crops up again. This violent event was scary, a life changing experience, and an emotional situation all in one. Therefore, if I happened to meet this same SUV driver again, I would know how to handle myself in the future. My reaction would be more controlled and understanding of the situation.

Through this experience, I have learned to not to respond to violence wherever possible. If I have no choice but to face it, I will not let it catch me off guard
