Survivor-Like Program PART A. – SURVIVOR FAMILY-SERIES My own idea of a Survivor-like program will be located in coastal areas in Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea. Blessed with black-sand beach, tropical rainforest, and with very diminutive population, it is the perfect place to create adventure. It will be participated with ten families with five members each – mother, father, three children below 25 years old but not younger than 8. They will be isolated in the island for forty-four days and by process of elimination, one family will emerge as the winner. The families will be provided with some of the basic needs in their lifeboat – clean water and food enough for 1.5 days, 2 blankets, and a knife. The families will have to support their own subsistence during free time. During activities, subsequent rewards and punishments per activity will be programmed. As the game progresses, challenges will be more physically demanding, mentally difficult, and psychologically stressful. This means, the basic necessities they will have to fend for themselves, to get rewards, they will have to strategize with their members, and they will have to harbor strength from the team for the psychological challenges – all as a family. The twist in the program lies farther during the game where families will be eliminated until only three will remain. As these families struggle to compete for the top spot, members will also be eliminated thus weakening the team set-up. Temptations of luxury will be introduced while rewards will be greater and challenges will vary from easy but tricky to hard but fun. The program is classified as suitable for general viewing. It is geared to be entertaining as well as educational. The content will go through major screening and evaluation for values it will instigate and amusement it will provide. PART B – ORAL PRESENTATION The existing trend of television viewers highly rate reality shows as the most entertaining and educational. The various realisms provides the public a kind of connection for the different situations that are universal among humans – pain, shame, competition, happiness, etc. Because these are the facets of social beings that appeal greatly towards the general public viewer, my reality show, called Survivor Family, can be quantified to hit big among various audiences and become successful. The Survivor Family series will be hosted by top personalities who have established themselves as a well-balanced persona. By appealing to the audience with the grand and remote setting, it will highly attract their attention as they are interested and almost always on the lookout for what is new, what is strange, what is “exotic”, what is on the other part of the world, what is left to be explored, etc. As you can see, the underlying theme of the Survivor Family Series is not just about competition between families, but rather competition among family members and fostering a stronger relationship through various challenging activities. These are the kinds of entertainment that people are hungry about. We are always generally interested in the dynamics of family – the troubles, the joys, the issues, and the resolutions. This is an interesting series because you do not only remove families from the game but you also eliminate members of other families to your advantage. We impose strategies expecting positive outcomes. This kind of friction can cause unintended consequences and we, as humans, would generally put ourselves into the shoes of the contestant to figure out what we are going to do. When we give the audience this kind of show, we are going to catch more of their attention. Catching the audience attention will consequentially capture the interests of sponsors, advertisers, and other advertising bigwigs. The show will be geared towards inviting companies who specialize in outdoor gadgets, or organizations that have niche trainings on family relationships, and even industry leaders for entertainment. Packed with unexpected activities, tough games, and real life drama, this show will surely hit big in the history of the television. PART C – ADVERTISING The Survivor Family series will be launched formally through series of teasers on air and on television. Further, various auditions will be conducted in different states while being broadcasted live. Simultaneously, announcements, teasers, questions with corresponding rewards will be initiated via social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, etc. Once fully launched, audience will be given the opportunity to participate by allowing them to vote against families they do not wish to win. Swirl 360’s “Candy in the Sun” will be used as original sound track for the rest of the season while various artists from the Independent sector/label will also be chosen as backgrounds. This musical piece is a perfect theme song since it brings into mind images of the sun, sea, and sand. It captures the basic emotion of going on an escapade sans the conveniences of the urban life. It strongly evokes a strong sense of adventurism and not being afraid of exploring new heights. These are important facets that people in general can relate to and would even secretly wish they are doing. Further, a niche 30-second infomercial will also be launched across the nation during prime times. The general design of this infomercial will cover what the reality show is all about. It was not your normal day to day homework where you read sources and answer questions according to the books content. It wasn’t at all extremely difficult, but it wasn’t easy either. It’s the kind where I was forced to think beyond my own comfort. Yes, it’s challenging. And the part I particularly like is thinking of changing the conventions set out before us – conventions believed by my ancestors and probably the same conventions that will be believed by generations after me. There is a feeling of liberation upon knowing that conventions, though established, are not necessarily beneficial. On the other hand, the part that I liked least is also the part I believe I struggled – creating my own society. It was a daring challenge and I felt that the norms are making it difficult for me to creatively imagine a society ideal in my own standards. The good thing with this assignment, I realized, is that I could improve on my reading comprehension skills. There’s just too much to read, and a whole lot more to understand.
