Robert Reich in his book”the rich are getting richer” describes the growing gap between the upper and lower half of the society. He used boat as a metaphor to depict the economic status of lower, upper and middle class. The rising boat of upper class is conquering and is taking benefit of the lower class. According to Reich (1991) “A boat containing routine producers is sinking rapidly” (p.290). Machines have replaced man and due to immigrants lack of jobs is becoming a problematic issue for lower class or the sinking boat.

Reich stated (1991) “The vessel containing America’s symbolic analyst” (p.299) or the rising boat designed and manufactured goods for living. They kept the goods in affordable prices so lower or middle class could buy them. Both ways they are earning good, getting huge money for ideas and profit on the sale. The labor and the middle class are getting nothing from this cycle of economic. Wendell Berry in “People, land and community” interlinks nature, people and welfare of all into one another.

He described that to achieve the optimum level of success people have to learn to live with harmony with each other and with the natural ways of the Earth. He explained that the global economy is structured on the philosophy of destructing one place for the sake of another place but through renewing relationship with community this destruction can be minimized. He used community as a metaphor to depict culture and harmony of nature. According to Berry (1983), “Our knowledge of the world instructs us first of all that the world is greater than our knowledge of it.”(p.183).

He laid emphasis on the knowledge of problems of a community by solving problems on the large scale eventually the personal problems will eliminate with no effort. Every person has to play his part to keep the natural ways of Earth intact and for survival the bond should be strong. Bibliography:Berry, W. (1983). Standing by words: Essays.
