All the wars and tragedies that occurred in this century were a result of one thing, indifference. Indifference refers to a state where a person cannot distinguish between cruelty and companion, dusk and dawn, crime and punishment, good and evil, and light and darkness. Indifference is an ethical act that is mostly practiced by people who want to live normally, have fine meals, and keep their sanity, while the world around them perishes in suffering. Indifference as a vice has made many people overlook other people’s despairs and pains.

In this situation, most people are only interested in striving for their safety and success, and this makes them avoid rude interruptions to their dreams, hopes, and work. This means that people who are indifferent consider their neighbors’ despairs and pains as of no consequence to their lives. Their indifference reduces their neighbors to abstractions. For instance, most people who have never been in prison are unaware of what happens behind the black gates. The prisoners usually perish in suffering, surviving on unhealthy food and being wrapped in torn clothes.

Most of them have lost their sense of self-worthiness, and they are even unaware of where they are: strangers to their environment. Indifference is also associated with enmity. This is because it usually only benefits the aggressors, but not the victims whose sufferings and pains intensify as they feel forgotten and abandoned. The aggressors always do not respond to the plights of hungry children, homeless refugees, and political prisoners in their cells. This makes the victims lose hope in fighting for a brighter future by regaining their human memory.

As we are moving into a new millennium, it is important for people who are still indifferent to learn from the Nineteenth Century’s events that, this act is not only a sin, but it is also a punishment. With indifference, it will still be difficult to maintain peace and order in the coming centuries. Several wars and tragedies occurred during this period. Citizens of every nation felt abandoned and forgotten to a point that even the world’s key leaders like Mrs. Clinton, have commented that this century was a period of remembrance.

Indifference barred leaders of the free world from acknowledging the cause of the war Hitler’s army waged against the Jews. Were it not for this vice, they would have done what it takes to intervene and stop this war. They would have spoken out with great conviction and outrage. Some great leaders like Franklin Delano Roosevelt who was aware of the cause of war, mobilized their armies to attack Hitler. However, due to indifference, Roosevelt turned over 1000 Jews who docked at St. Lois back to Germany; though he was sure Hitler will finish them all once he finds them.
