Introduction British society like any other society is facing many problems related to different aspects of people’s life. These problems have appeared due to a variety of factors, such as, modernization, changes in the lifestyle, and social development. Although there are many problems being faced by the British society these days but some of the most critical problems include increased cost of life, weak family system, and social insecurity. In this paper, we will discuss the causes of these problems along with some ways to overcome these problems. 2. Increased Cost of Life Increased cost of life is one of the major issues being faced by the British society. The major causes behind this issue include increased taxes, price fluctuations, and economic instability. One of the major changes in society which has occurred in the British society due to increased cost of life is the increase in the graph of child labor. It is a fact that increased cost of life drives parents to make their children work. When parents belonging to poor social class become unable to meet requirements of life with the amount of money that they earn, they make their children work. It is the responsibility of the government to take considerable steps to overcome the issue of increased cost of life. Implementation of effective economic policies, increasing employment opportunities, and better utilization of taxes are some of the good ways which can help Britain come out of the issue of increased cost of life. When the government will implement effective economic policies, there will be no price fluctuations and people will be able to buy products at a consistent price. Another way to overcome the issue of increased cost of life is by increasing the employment opportunities for the citizens of the United Kingdom. One of the main reasons behind increase in the ratio of unemployment is increased number of immigrants in the United Kingdom. Employment opportunities for the local people become less, as employers prefer to give jobs to the immigrants on low wage rates. The government needs to implement quota system in order to ensure increase in the job opportunities for the citizens of the United Kingdom. 3. Weak Family System Another social issue being faced by the British society these days is weak family system. If we talk about single-parent family system, we can say that it is a form of family system which makes it difficult for the parents to raise their children properly because various financial and social problems. 3.1 Divorce Divorce is the major reason behind weak family systems. Divorce is never considered a good act in any society. Separation between two spouses puts a very negative impact on both genders. The problems, which arise for most of the divorced men, include emotional adjustment problems, loss of intimacy, depression, and social stress. Kennard (2006) asserts, “Men find divorce more emotionally problematic than women”. Men often tend to isolate themselves from the society after divorce in order to hide their feelings from other people. Separation puts a very negative impact on Women. The problems, which arise for most of the divorced women, include poor lifestyle, emotional adjustment problems, constant depression, social and emotional stresses, guilt and shame, sense of insecurity, feelings of rejection, and loss of self-esteem. “Feeling a sense of guilt over a divorce is quite common, especially when there are children in the middle of the situation” (Hickson, 2010). Divorce also affects children of the divorced parents. Some of most considerable effects of divorce on children include insecure future, feeling of rejection, loneliness, powerlessness, emotional stress, and decreased interest in education. The pain experienced by children at the beginning of a divorce is composed of several factors. Some of the most influencing factors include sense of vulnerability, loss of the non-custodial parent, and strong feelings of powerlessness (Eleoff, 2003). 3.2 Teen Pregnancy Teen pregnancy is also a major cause of weak family structures. “Adolescent pregnancy is the term used for pregnancy at an age when pregnancy is considered inappropriate due to the youth of the woman” (Barnett, n.d.). An increase in the number of teen pregnancies always leads to an increase in abortion, which is also a major issue being faced by the British society. Researches show that a large number of women in the United Kingdom undergo abortion at least once in their reproductive lives. Abortions occur because some women are not financially able to bear the expenses of bringing up a child whereas sometimes the family of a woman does not allow her to give birth to a child. Abortion in medical science is a process in which doctors, with the approval of the pregnant women, kill the fetus in order to terminate the pregnancy. “Abortion can lead to problems later in life as after all you are tampering with your body and obstructing the natural course of happenings” (Godbole, 2010). Some women also say that they are not ready for taking responsibility of a child. Such women are either immature or they have other responsibilities such as jobs or studies to take care of. Increase in abortions is also a result of modernization which has put a negative impact on the minds of young men and women. 3.3 Ways to prevent Divorce and Teen pregnancies Divorce puts negative impact not only on the lives of the parents but also on the lives of their children. The government of the United Kingdom should do effective legislation to reduce the number of divorces taking place in the country. Moreover, the government also needs to make public aware of the consequences of teen pregnancies along with creating awareness regarding the ways to prevent such pregnancies. Parents of adolescents also hold the responsibility to stop their children from experiencing any kind of sexual activity in the teenage. Moreover, they should also make their children aware of the role and importance of using contraception measures during sexual activities. 4. Social Unrest British society is also facing the issue of social unrest. Two of the major causes of this issue include increase in the number of gangs and illegal drug use. 4.1 Formation of Gangs In the United Kingdom, the increasing number of gangs is creating an alarming situation for the society. There are different types of gangs present in the United Kingdom, such as, criminal gangs and race based gangs. Gangs not only give rise to violence but also cause social and political unrest. 4.2 Illegal drug Use Drug trafficking, is also one of the most critical reasons behind social unrest. It is associated with the large-scale immigrations to the United Kingdom. Drug trafficking is a business which earns a lot of money to the drug dealers, manufacturers, and all other people involved in this business. Drug trafficking harms the lives of local citizens as a large number of young adults become addicted to drugs and different controlled substances. 4.3 Ways to prevent Social Unrest The government of the United Kingdom needs to empower the law enforcement agencies to reduce the number of gangs. The law enforcement agencies need to properly implement the laws regarding prevention of gang formation and drug use. The criminal justice system of the country needs to be made more effective and efficient in order to bring peace in the society. 5. Conclusion Summing it up, British society is facing many problems related to different aspects of people’s life. Some of the most critical problems include increased cost of life, weak family system, and social insecurity. These issues are harming the roots if the British society. The government of the United States needs to do effective legislation not only to overcome these issues but also to ensure everlasting peace in the country.
