One day, Mr. Shelby and his wife encountered a financial problem, and were forced to sell some of their slaves. One of them in Uncle Tom and the other was Eliza’s son, Harry. They were to be sold to a slave trader. As Eliza knew this, she planned an escape to Canada with her husband and child, since Canada has now abolished slavery and can offer protection to refugees. Uncle Tom, a middle aged man, was sold to someone in the deep South, where slavery was still strong. As Eliza takes off, Uncle Tom remains and proceeds to be collected by the slave trader.

He did not even try to escape. So Uncle Tom and the slave trader went on to the Southern State. Along the way, Uncle Tom has managed to save a little girl from drowning in the river. The girl was named Eva. Because of this, Tom was bought by the girl’s father, Augustine St. Clare, and he was to the personal servant of Eva. Augustine St. Clare treats his slaves well, and so is Eva. Mrs. St. Clare though, is different – she was a typical slave owner – a slave driver. Eva is a representation of a Christian in this novel.

She is a very devout Christian and Uncle Tom grows fond of her every day; they even discuss their Christian faith every day. Eva even transforms lives, as she teaches another slave to read. One day, she has gotten ill and when she’s about to die, she preached about God’s love and she has given blonde locks for the slaves to remember her by. As Eva died, Uncle Tom was promised freedom by Augustine St. Clare but before he finished the papers needed for Tom’s freedom, he was killed in a brawl.

So before he could be granted freedom, he was sold in an auction again. His new master is Simon Legree. Simon Legree is a typical slave driver who demands so much work from slaves that the slaves often die from work and buys some more slaves to replace the dead ones.
