Multilingual America The article d “Multilingual America” was written by William Frey. Frey holds a PhD as a demographer and has studied the influence language adaptability has due to immigration. He has written various works regarding the different aspects of population and its effects on the national economy or politics. The article written by the author focuses on the increase of language diversification in the United States as centuries of immigration have already made the country ethnically diverse.

The author starts his article with the quote saying “America’s identity as a melting pot now extends beyond multiple races and cultures to also include numerous languages”. This is true for me since I come from such a country where diversity with ethnic groups is very clear and that multiple languages are used at the same time or are adapted with the primary language. There is hardly anything that is contradicting with what the author wrote in his article. His work is very exacting and valid due to the use of calculated figures and statistical data.

Multilingual is the key word in this article since the author focuses on the growing number of languages being spoken and used in comparison with the English language. The increasing number of foreign immigrants to the country means that more non-English languages are being spoken at an increasing rate. I agree with the author’s observation in which many languages are introduced through immigration, and it many have difficulty learning the English. The result of this would result to ethnic groups creating more insular cultural sub-units of society that deal with daily matters among themselves.

The author treats refutations in a matter-of-fact matter, using objective data to support his claims and to not appear as biased. I can relate to his view in real life in a sense that some ethnic groups around my community speak their own language among themselves while not being well versed with the English language.
