I decided it was now time for me to start creating exciting memories. The first memory that I decided to make was to swim underwater. I went to Dive World to get oriented on the class and requirements. I was given a DVD on scuba diving to watch, and materials to read. The next day would commerce our training where we would meet in class. To my great surprise, I was in a class of six students where four of us were aged above 45 years.
On the very first day, I rushed through the quizzes and managed to score a 90 per cent mark, this was satisfactory for me. I went home anxiously waiting for the next day where we would return to training and for the first time we are to go underwater. The actual training was going to start the next day.
The day seemed to drag itself through to the evening. When the clock hit 6 Pm, I was already in class and already suited up for training. Today is the day that we get to learn on how to swim underwater and manage to breathe at the same time. My instructor helped me to put on my gear, at first the gear felt so heavy, and I thought I was going to fall over and drown in the water. My instructor advised mo to lean forward until I was completely submerged in the water.
Before diving into the water, we had to do a buddy check. The buddy check demanded that we check our BCD’s followed by the weight belt, the regulators, and the air, and then gave the final Ok sign. A simple way to remember this process was “Blondes with Regulators Are Fun”. Going under water and at the same time being able to breathe, seemed so surreal and exuberating and even though we were in a pool and I did not want to come back up.
We did our training exercises, which consisted of filling up your mask half way while submerged in water and being able to clear the water by tilting your head slightly back and blowing out hard through your nose, removing your mask completely ...
