Annotated Bibliography Jaffal, A.A., Banat, I.M., El Mogheth, A.A., Nsanze, H., Bener, A., and Ameen, A.S. (1997). Residential Indoor Airborne Microbial Populations in the United Arab Emirates. Environmental International, vol. 23, no. 4, pp. 529-533. This article is an investigation of airborne microorganisms in homes in the United Arab Emirates. This study was conducted in the city of Al-Ain and focused on an experiment for the study’s purposes involving three households. The ultimate goal of the entire research is to determine whether the microorganisms found in UAE households have adverse impact on human health.

The findings of the study revealed that there are a good number of organisms present in houses but most of these are harmless or have no significant harmful effect on humans. For example, nine groups of bacteria and fungi were identified and that their presence is determined by the level of hygiene of the human inhabitants. One can scarcely criticize the methodology of the research. The researchers, who are medical doctors and respected academics in the field, perused several apparatus that ensured accurate data collection and analyses.

This piece of research is important especially when done on periodical basis because it provides an opportunity for health authorities to monitor the pattern and development of problems so that they could be properly addressed. Kazim, A. (2007). Assessments of primary energy consumption and its environmental consequences in the United Arab Emirates. Renewable and Sustainable energy Reviews, vol. 11, pp. 426-446. As an oil-producing country, the United Arab Emirates has, unarguably, one of the worst air qualities around the world.

This has been confirmed by this paper, which investigated the impact of the primary energy consumption in the country on the environment. This work is qualitative study that collected both primary and secondary sources so that a clear theoretical framework can be achieved. A fundamental component of the data sources are the official documents that provided the authoritative empirical evidence to the points raised, their analyses and research findings. For example, there is the UAE’s energy profile and how shaped the country’s carbon emission.

The research cited the increase in urbanization, in tandem with the already given fact that UAE is an oil-producing country, as the main antecedent of the incidence of environmental risk factors. This is a scholarly study initially undertaken for academic purposes. Because of its significance, however, it was readily accepted for publication by the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews. Li, Y., Gibson, J., Jat, P., Puggioni, G., Hasan, M., West, J., Vizuete, W., Sexton, K., and Serre, M. (2010).

Burden of disease attributed to anthropogenic air pollution in the United Arab Emirates: Estimates based on observed air quality data. Science of the Total Environment, vol. 408, pp. 5784-5793. This paper is a fitting successor to Kazim’s work, which was cited previously. This is because it focused on a specific issue or problem that emerged out of air pollution, which is a direct consequence of the energy production and consumption in the United Arab Emirates. Based on the air quality data, the researchers estimated the degree of risks in contracting diseases for the country’s inhabitants.

An important aspect of the research, besides the actual discourse and analysis of the UAE experience, was its comprehensive citation of the experiences of other industrialized countries. It provided points of reference, benchmarks and comparison so that the researchers’ discussion was made more credible and authoritative. Certainly, the research identified the proprietary pollutants and linked them to the cases of mortality rates, the incidence of specific diseases and environmental problems.

A very disturbing finding, for instance, was how it was found that a collective percent of the deaths that occur in the UAE annually can be attributed to air pollution exposure. Mahmoud, M., Kassem, H., Wahab, N., Saad, A., and Moez, P. (2011). The association between glutathione S-transferase P1 polymorphisms and asthma in Egyptians. Alexandria Journal of Medicine, vol. 47, pp. 105-115. Yet another excellent resource on asthma and the role of the environment as a risk factor, this article explores the details about the disease itself and the impact of the problems such as air pollution.

The researchers focused on how airways are obstructed by factors such as the GSTP1 (glutathione S-transferase P1) polymorphisms. The authors were medical doctors so the entire study is typified by technical and clinical terms and concepts. This is especially pronounced in the actual research study, laboratory tests and their statistical analyses. The results and findings as outlined in the paper demonstrated how environmental risk factors are difficult to control. The significance of the study rests on its claim that environmental risk factors claim as much causality as genetic predisposition especially when it works in tandem with it and immunological aberration. Radhi, H. (2009).

Evaluating the potential impact of global warming on the UAE residential buildings – A contribution to reduce the CO2 emissions. Building and Environment, vol. 44, pp. 2451-2462. Radhi’s study on globalization is significant because it contextualized such global issue into the United Arab Emirates experience. It was even made more relevant by the fact that the author brought the problem in the very doorstep of the UAE households. The research objective was simple and, hence, was easily achieved.

Radhi aimed to demonstrate how global warming directly impact residences and other built environments in the country. The study found that the steady increase in temperature brought about by the spike in CO2 emissions requires more and more energy used to make houses habitable. The researcher specifically identified the use of air conditioning units as one of the variables driving the rise in energy consumption. Radhi is a faculty of the Architectural Engineering Department of the UAE University.

The subject is both within his professional and academic expertise, making the article authoritative.
